I pulled out that tripod - an old Velbon - that was a "decent" tripod in it's day (and just about identical to the same stuff offered today). When I did the testing on it the performance was horrible in comparison to the good stuff. So bad in comparison that it was even hard to measure - I'd characterize it as more than an order of magnitude worse in damping performance. Obsessive Gear List

I was trying to take a night time shot over the water (full moon) - would have been a fantastic shot. The breeze set up a resonance in the legs and the head was sloppy (as described here) so that the actual images were worse than hand holding. That's what sent me down the path to get decent equipment and to actually empirically test some of this stuff. It ain't just three sticks and a clamp that make for a good rig. The engineering and tolerances in decent stuff is actually quite significant. Obsessive Gear List

If anything you two Johns are in denial that something cheap could actually be good.
