ok so this just started after i cleaned my gear. The gears in the lens seam to be trying to continue focusing even after the lens has reached its max focal length. its like a grinding noise. ill try to upload a video for an example..

can anyone tell me why its doing it?

A 24-70mm won't replace a fast prime. If you enjoy that shallow depth of field from the f/1.8, by all means replace it with another prime. The f/2.8 on the zoom won't give you that shallow DOF.

I wouldn't bother to fix the 50mm f/1.8. Should consider the 50mm f/1.4 for better build quality~!

Keep it and use it as is. It's not worth fixing unless you want to do it yourself

ya im going to use as is and replace it with a smaller mm lens..

Stone which do u use more that 30mm or the 50mm...

i have a 18-125 and i find myself shooting alot at around 25 or so, so i was thinking i might like a prime in the 20 to 30 range

Depends on what you are shooting I guess? The 30mm on a crop is a standard prime, the 50mm is a good lens for portraits on a crop body. Keep in mind, the sigma 30mm is designed for crop camera only, it will not work on a full frame body. If you think you will upgrade to FF in the short future, consider this factor~!

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 24-70mm. I am just letting him know zoom lens won't get the same shallow DOF from a fast prime.

My point was that f/1.4 is more useful in dreams than in real life, and thus f/2.8 on a lens likely to be used at fairly close distances isn't the drawback that one might think.

f/1.4 maybe soft but stop it down to f/2 on a prime, it will gives you super sharp images.

Sharpness isn't the point -- it's having too little DoF for real-world shooting.
