I have a sigma 85 1.4, but this is my 2nd copy and its front focusing when my target is around 12+ feet away from me. Anything in front of this is perfect. I'm tired of playing around with sigma and will just get the canon 85 1.8 for now until the end of this year. What do you guys think?

I have it and its a great little lens. I really like the fact it takes up almost no room in my bag.

As I mentioned before, I "downgraded" from the Sigma to the 85 1.8 and couldn't be happier. My bread and butter primes are the 24L and 50L, so I felt I could safely make this move, but it's worked out surprisingly well for me.

As mentioned, it's much smaller and not nearly as heavy. The AF is actually MUCH better than the 85L or the Sigma 85, and the IQ wide open is pretty damn good, at least with my copy.

And of course, it cost so much less than the other 2 options.

I highly recommend it!

(I'm not pro.) For what it's worth, I regularly use the 100 f/2, which is an extremely similar lens in design and build. It performs very well, but in a year or so, when I get the cash, I'll likely upgrade it to the 85L.

Great lens. Some chromatic aberration, but easily fixable in pp and only apparent under some (bright) conditions. I use this lens constantly and wouldn't part with it (unless someone gave me an L copy out of the blue). Nice reach on a ff. I like the light weight and find it less obtrusive than the white 70-200L which is the other lens I use for this reach.

I use it and love it. Very crisp, great AF. I swap it between a 7d and a 5dm2 for 85 & 135 equivalent. I especially like changing from my 24-70 2.8L to the 85 1.8. Good primes just have an impressive 'feel.'

I've had the 85 1.8 for a long time and while all of my other lenses have since been upgraded, I've never felt much need with this one. Its a great little lens, super fast and accurate AF, small, lightweight and very sharp. As others have mentioned, its biggest fault is some CA wide open...but given the postives...its a fair trade IMO.

almost! since i'm going through amazon. I might give the sigma 50 1.4 a try since 50 is my favorite focal length lol. Yeah it came from left field, so now i'm crossed :( the main reason is because amazon has a free promotion of giving away a triffen filter with the lens, but they want to charge me next day air shipping for both :(

We talked about this offline. I wouldn't put too much stock on that free Tiffen filter. Don't let that sway your decision.

If 50mm is a bread and butter focal length, then yeah, I'd check out the Sigma. But you know how it is with Sigma lenses. Hopefully you'll get a better copy this time.
