I bought it specifically to shoot indoor volleyball, based on the reports I heard. It's obvious, in my timeline of matches, when I got this lens. Clearer, crisper images, and more in-focus. I used to use the Canon 50mm 1.4. The 85 just focuses faster.

I've used them both for this application. The 85 is the best price/performance lens you can get if you want that focal length.

not since i got my 50 1.2 !

Why do you like the 50mm 1.2 better than the 85mm 1.8. Does it give you more background blur?

Apples to Oranges really since they are different focal lengths. I too like my 50L because I've always felt more comfortable shooting a 50mm prime than the 85mm prime. But the 85mm definitely has its place and is used at every single wedding I shoot.

There was a thread once about which lens did you most regret selling. The 85 was one but with mixed feelings. I had that lens and a 100 macro and decided to sell both to finance the 100L macro IS. Focal length is pretty close and the macro is just as sharp at 2.8 as the 85 stopped down to 2.8. Lost a little speed and bokeh but the 100 is killer sharp and has IS. I'm an IS junky.

I did not get as much use out of the 85 as I get with the 100 but I wish I still had it. Small and a gem.

nothing specific, i always loved my 50 1.4 so when i got the 1.2, it just pretty much stayed on my camera even moreso than the 1.4.

i just keep the 85 as a backup in case somethign ever happens to my 501.2

I have it and love it. It's one I don't think I'll ever upgrade to the L. Zack Arias was just raving about this lens on his blog too (external link).

I have used my 85 1.8 a couple of times for indoor basketball (same situation as vollyball) and it was awesome. The AF is quite amazing, maybe the best I have used.

I have the 85 f/1.8 as well and love it. Amazing portrait lens and ultra sharp! Highly recommended.

I'm impressed with this lens with just shooting around the house. I'm doing a engagement session with it and I will let you guys know how it does. I will be comparing it to the sigma 85 I returned.
