I have a Canon 40D body and I am taking my Canon 100-400 IS lens to the US Nationals at Indy this labor day weekend. I want to shoot a night time qualifying session with this gear. What settings should I use as far as ISO, speed and aperature? I want to shoot the nitro cars with the big header flames. I know this lens is not as fast as it should be as comapred to - say an f/2.8 lens...but I can tweak the in camera settings a little to compensate. Thanks to all who read and respond to this post!

I can't give you a ton of camera settings tips... Sounds like you'll have the ISO in the red due to the speed of your lens. Also, since it may be difficult to maintain high shutter speeds, try some panning techniques to capture motion blur. I'm not a pro by any means and very amateur when it comes to the DSLR.

I'm jealous! I haven't been to Indy since 1998 or 1999. Make sure you get around the Comp Eliminator pits. I'll be at Beech Bend (Division 3 points meet) the previous weekend. Happy racing!

Evening pictures with a Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens that is the functional equivalent to a Canon 100-400mm. The use of slow shutter speeds for "panning" motion blur may vary the results.

The T2i used to generate these images was set for Auto ISO. Other than shutter speed, the camera made the exposure decisions.
