I've had my Canon 50D for almost three years now with a lot of use for a non-professional. For about the past 3-4 months I've noticed that the noise seems to be worse than when I originally got it. I've read all the forums that talk about 50D noise issues, but those posts all seem to indicate that they had noise problems from the begining. Mine was fine for 2+ years and I think its starting to get worse.

Is this something that anyone else has heard of? I imagine that sensors can go bad just like any other piece of electronics, but I've never heard of this happening.

Oh yeah, we've heard that many times!
It usually happens just before (or just after) the new model is released. ;)

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Is it possible that you learned a lot in the last years and you trained your eyes so now you realize the noise? Did you compare shots from 2009 with actual ones - same lens, same f-stop, same ISO and same shutter speed plus comparable light? Is it really worse?

Cheers

Are your shooting habits changing? I just learned (from another thread) that, in terms of net noise, it's better to go with a higher ISO than to increase the exposure in post processing. (Applies only to Canon cameras evidently.)

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

all jokes aside i have started noticing this too on my 5d2. i still remember the first day i took it out. ISO 3200 was noise free. now i'm seeing a lot of noise at iso 3200 and up. it could be that my eyes already got used to FF and think it's bad when it really isn't...or that i'm not exposing correctly. (probably both though)

I have a 50D and, quite the contrary, its noise performance has gotten better with a) the newer software updates and b) the availability of better and better PP software (including Canon's DPP and Adobe LR3). I remember the very bad horizontal banding of the camera two years ago, at ISO12800, which now is almost invisible.

To answer your question,, a big resounding no. Even my six year old 20D, the noise hasn't increased over time.
