I need a new lens to go along with my 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 70-200 f4. I am considering 3 different ones. 35l, 16-35l, or 24-70. I need something wider since 50 is the widest I own. Most of my work is portraits so my 50 and 85 will get most of that work. But there are plenty of times when I am with my kids or out shooting a landscape where wider is needed.

I am leaning toward the 16-35 or 35l. I love primes but worry that 35 may still not be wide enough.

If you don't need f2.8 perhaps the 17-40.

Haven't owned any of the three, but in principle I like the idea of the 24-70. The range would give you good flexibility for taking pictures of your kids, and 24mm wouldn't be too bad for landscapes. If landscapes are more of a priority, 16-35L might be a better choice. I just think 35L would cause challenges in composing with kids moving around and it's not that wide.

If you like primes, ever consider the Sigma 30mm 1.4? A bit wider than the 35 you're considering as well.

That would be a nice choice on the 50D, but isn't it APS-C so it wouldn't work for the OP's 5d2?

If you think the 35l may not be wide enough, why not look at the 24l II?

First, for general purpose, get the 24-70/2.8. It will be an excellent choice and complement your current lenses really well, useful on either FF or crop camera.

If you want wider still, I really like 20/2.8. It's a nice lens and my widest for FF. Makes for a nice "wder normal" on crop, too.

On FF I would use the 35/1.4L in place of the 50/1.4, but wouldn't need both of them. On the other hand, I like the 50mm on 1.6X crop much better than a 35mm. That's a bit of a quandry.

If portraits are your thing, sometime try a 135/2... fabulous lens I really wouldn't want to be without on FF camera. It's equal to using your 85/1.8 on your 50D, only even better.

I have about $1500-18000 to spend. What are your thoughts on a 17-40 and a 135 F2? When I need to shoot wide at reception I usually am using flash anyways so F4 probably wouldn't be an issue.

A 17-40 and a 24-105 would be about $1,800. The 17-40 on your 5DMKII and the 24-105 on your 50D would cover 17mm to 198mm in 35mm field of view equivalency.

I know nothing about the 17-40 but love the 24-105 on my 50D as a general purpose lens. The 24-105 might be a good lens on a FF camera for your stated needs.

What are peoples thoughts on the 24-105? I'm sure it would be a great every day lens but would i use it for weddings?
