A quick question to MPE-65 users, do you get the AF confirm light with this lens?

I know the lens doesn't AF, but I was expecting it to confirm focus just like my 100mm on MF + tubes still do.

PS: The lens is amazing, it requires some time to get used to NOT being able to shoot anything bigger then 20mm :D

Ya know, I have never noticed. AF with this lens as mentioned is totally useless and since the DOF can be measured in fractions of a mm, I just assumed that the confirmation lights are pretty useless as well.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Really? Something has to be in focus unless your just not getting close enough. The working distance on this lens is not great.

I was slightly jesting, my handheld shots generally suffer motion blur and/or the fact I miss the focus altogether. I just can't stay still.

I recieved a focus rail today, and can pretty well confirm there is no focus confirm beep/light with the MPE.

set shutter to 1/200, low iso, f/11 and use the flash. The motion will go away. Now you just have to nail the focus right.

Agreed. No focus confirmation (squares in viewfinder or beeping). No problems with motion blur here, thanks to flash. My problems are all with underexposure. With flash exposure compensation at -1 everything is underexposed and at -.67 my highlight warning flashes all over the image. *sigh* tricky lens to use well, easy lens to get amazing shots with!

Yes, the MP-E 65mm is a completely manual lens.

Those "focus squares" only occur in AF lenses, so naturally they would not exist in a completely manual lens.

Your reasoning is a bit off there. You can get focus confirmation with a manual focus lens, such as one adapted from another mount, if you have a chipped adapter. I don't see why why Canon wouldn't do this with the 65mm.

Well, I understand what you are saying, namely that there is a possibility of having both manual focus and some sort of "confirmation" light (albeit not an AF confirmation). So again, I do understand what you're saying.

But with the MP-E it goes a little deeper than that, and if you "don't see why" Canon doesn't offer an electronic means of confirming focus, let me remind/inform you that the MP-E doesn't even focus at all, let alone have AF.

The ring on the MP-E lens only changes magnification (from 1x - 5x), but there is no actual "focusing" element to the lens: you must either physically move forward, or backward, in order to achieve a "visual" focus when using this lens.

So this is why the MP-E 65 doesn't have "focus confirmation" at all ... it doesn't have any focusing elements ... it only magnifies within a certain range ... while you must physically get the lens closer, or farther, to achieve focus.

Hope this clarifies :)

I agree this lens is more of a magnifying glass than a lens. If it DID have focus confirmation, it would be beeping madly a hundred times a minute with the squares dancing wildly all around your subject as your .025mm field of focus grabbed into every part of the insects and such. Not sure there would be any way to make it meaningful.
