So I am just interested in seeing who on this site is actually a full time landscape photographer? I mean that as in you do not have a studio and do portraits with the occasional landscape shot that you thinks amazing :)... but as in you just do landscape photography to live off of. I realize this will break down to very few of you--maybe a handful, but I am going to be a senior in college this year and starting to look into possible career choices... was interested in seeing if anyone on here did that full-time... Cheers, David.

CAN someone actually live off of landscape photography?! What do you do with them? Sell them as stock photos? Poster companies? I would think the traveling alone would eat up anything youd make just looking for new places to take photographs. Unless you get extremely well known and then get paid a lot to do it.

I know... thats a huge expense in and of it self for landscape photography. Which is one reason why I am interested in seeing what the deal is :). I mean I went to school for business/accounting. I have yet to take a class in photography, but am this fall. I can easily get a job outside of college making some good money, and do it as a hobby to finance my gear--but who knows :)... maybe more.

I don't, but I know (not personally) several full-time landscape photographers: Steve Sieren (external link), Michael Frye (external link) and Gary Crabbe (external link) to name a few.

Heres a professional landscape photographer and to do it right you need to have several high end galleries carrying your work. Adams managed to do it to but its not easy.

He's an accounting major. If his grades are decent he won't have a problem getting hired (yes...even in this economy).

Haha I was expecting a cheeky comment like this. No I am not living under a rock, thank you for checking though.

My grades are pretty solid. But in all seriousness I am not extremely worried about getting a job once I find out what I want to do exactly. Lets just say I have some connections... so thats not as big of an issue as it is for most college grads because of the networking I have at my disposal.

Thanks Mike and Airfrogusmc. Some good websites, maybe I'll send those guys and email and hope for a response.

If you say so.

I met a few pros in Duck,NC, Bar Harbor, ME, Yellowstone and an ex NatGeo guy in NJ. They have a saying about the successful photogs in their field. "Born with a camera in their hands". It means that they started out rich, could afford to travel and build a portfolio, then they could sell via connections.

I noticed that eventually they all said that. And all but one had a day job.

I was just being "cheeky". While the economy is terrible right now, there are still plenty of opportunities out there. Especially if you are flexible in what you work on and where you can move. Keep being optimistic.

^ Thanks haha.

Karl thats pretty tight. Your works great (seen it on the site before). Sam, that does make sense. especially because being in Atlanta Georgia is far from being out west in terms of 'landscape opportunities'. Having the money to be able to travel and go the places to build a diverse and good portfolio has been something I need to do. Yeah I was thinking yesterday how having a day job would make sense... just go shoot after work and on the weekends until it picks up (if it ever does--but at least your shooting and having fun).

bah man, im a bit in the same situation as you. im graduated in business, but always loved landscape photography. not only for the photos, but the whole concept of being around nature seems so nice and peaceful.

i was wondering (actually opened another thread about it, but an authomatic search led me here) what would take to be an professional on this matter, but it seems to me that it might be way out of my league. i have a boring, yet decent, job for average people in my city, but its nothing excepcional, even for one who doesnt have many bills to pay. and by following the work of some landscape photographers, i realise that they all must be quite rich hehe

here in my city (not a very large city in brazil), most professionals are for events, such a weddings, graduation parties etc. im not rly into that kind of stuff. i wouldnt know even where to start over here
