I have the stuff listed in my signature, and am thinking about buying/renting a 24-105 f4L IS for the trip. Would something else server me better? I'm concerned the 24 might not be wide enough for on the ship, but my wife is starting to do a lot of weddings, and the 24-105 would be nice for those.

an UWA + your 17-85 will be perfect. Bring along a flash or the 50 1.4 if you feel you need low light capability :)

How fast are these things to focus? And not sure how much they would help my wife in her wedding shots. I also want the lens to be part an anniversary present as we will be celebrating during the trip. Thought the 16-35 or 24-105 might be of more use to her.

So what is it that you are looking for - weddings or Spain and the cruise? If the former - I cannot help you, no experience. If the latter, then 24mm on a crop is not wide enough not only on the boat, but in Spain as well. I travel to old Europe often, in fact three days ago I came back from Switzerland. My main lens is the 17-70, but I have to reach for my 10-20 frequently when there. You will just not have enough room to back off to fit a cathedral or an old square in the frame.

By all means buy a lens... That is what trips are for: to give you an excuse to purchase more glass...

24-70 is a excellent lens, Its not all that wide on a crop camera, but the images are well worth that loss. I actually (stupidly) sold my 24-70 to get the 24-105, it had great color, sharpness, and control just like the 24-70, but I found IS really useless at that range, and F4, well... it aint 2.8 :)

I eventually sold the 24-105 and bought a few primes, and im saving for a 24-70 again.

IMO, its the best general range len, especially if your wife is shooting weddings. 2.8 > IS anyday.

totally agree here...
-Spain, you gonna love something wide! and 24x1.6 is not wide!
-Weddings... nothing beats the 24-70.

Is say buy a 24-70 and a 10-22 :)

Don't forget to find a strap with uncutable cables in it, for your bag, and possibly for your camera as well. A few people at work went on a cruise this summer and then stayed in Spain afterwards, and had backpacks and a few other things nabbed by people as they were checking into their hotel and sitting at restaurants. They were there one second, and gone the next.

For the trip I would like to take to France and Spain next summer, I'm defintely taking my Sigma 10-20, Tamron 17-50 F/2.8, Sigma 30/f1.4 and the Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS II and very possibly the Sigma 150-500 OS & Sigma 150 F/2.8 Marco like I did for my trip to Paris last year. Toss in a Gitzo CF Monopod, and the GT1541T Tripod and I'm all set. Just hoping the new Lee Filter Kit will fit in the bag with the laptop.

I agree with LBsimon. Those old cathedrals are large and dark. Wide. Wide. Wide. I spent a week in Spain in March with my 7D and the Sigma 17-70 OS. Most of the time, it was wide enough for my purposes, but not always. The OS was invaluable inside the cathedrals.

I was hoping to kill 2 birds with one stone. I found a good deal on a 24-105, I think she will get a lot of use out of at receptions and the like where she can use a flash, and the 17-85 just doesn't cut it. And talked to a friend who says I can borrow his 10-20 sigma. ;-)a

Are you a weight lifting champion?:D Or are you going to do it as a professional gig? My sholders get tired of having just three lenses in the bag. If I took what you are planning to do, I would not enjoy my vacation. But that's just me.

In fact, I am going to Paris next month. I plan to take the Sigma 17-70 OS, the Sigma 10-20, and maybe a fast pime. That's it.

Nope, just something to do for a holiday :-) :-) :-).
That is the normal content of my DryZone backpack that I carry
around almost every day. I sometimes pack a bit more depending upon
where I'm going. The Gitzo CF Tripod and Monopod really helped to
drop the weight :-)

I rented the 24-105L for my 7D a few months ago for my Italy trip. The lens took very sharp pictures but I probably had my 10-22 on the camera 90% of the time while I was there. UWA was nice when all the ruins and churches are super tall but located on narrow streets. I'm saving for the 24-105 but I would get the 24-70 before that.
