Just picked up the 16-35II... I have a couple 77mm filters like the b&w cpl nano and a couple nd's
I was wondering if anyone has used 77mm filters with an adapter and what the results were... Vignetting?

The 77mm filters will have way too much vignetting on the 16-35mm. I'm not actually sure how much you will get using a crop camera, but on a FF you can't do it. Why don't you try it out and see how it is, since you already have the lens and the filter?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Well I don't have an adapter to mount the filter... I know its only a few bucks but I figured I'd ask before I wasted the money...

I have both the lens and the camera I can get an answer for you in one second.....

OK heres what I did. I mount the lens and did a few test shots and at first placed the filter into the lens barrel (77 fit inside) and held it in place at the filter threads. I used live view and zoomed back and forth and didn't see any vignetting effects due to the filter. I then took the filter and held it with about a finger tips width away from the filter threads and zoomed back and forth and didn't notice an effects as well so from what I've seen it seems to be ok. The only thing I could think of would be if the adapter is oddly shaped or sticks out a huge amount for some reason.

Thanks for the testing. I think from the pics of the adapter that I saw its just the thickness of the threads that it would extend from the front element.

I imagine it would work then considering I put the filter into the lens barrel .

Sounds like it will. I guess ill just order one. Much cheaper than buying a new set of filters.

No filters on my lenses, just the naked lens exposed to the outside world.

^^^ Well it really depends.... I mean he could be talking about CPL's, or ND filters or a whole slew of other filters.

I'm not using them for protection. I am using them for their purpose. I don't usually keep a filter on unless the shot calls for it... Just like my original post said, CPL and ND
