Why would he bring a 5D II anyway? The lenses I understand so you can test it, but the 5D II has no bearing on the sale. Maybe he's trying to "prove" he knows about cameras. Other people here are saying it's worth twice $1700 so I'd be weary of buying it. (I have no idea on used prices for a 1Ds III.)

I did follow up with the seller to ask him why he was selling it for cheap and he didn't give me a clear answer. His response was enough to turn me off.

Anyhoo, I am now a proud owner of a mint 5D1. Why he was selling it for so cheap shall remain a mystery forever.

If you saw the camera and it looks in good condition, take a few shots with it . If it seems to work like a ids should.
BUY IT!!!! it's a great camera.

Even if the camera exists and it works I'd be very suspicious of one being sold at this price. Anyone can punch "Canon !ds Mark III" into Google and figure out very quickly that even well worn bodies go for a lot more than $1700.
