Recently my 70-200 fell about a foot or so out of it's bag onto a hardwood floor. When I picked it up it sounded like an element was loose inside the lens near the mount. When I tried attaching it to my body, the IS motor was making an odd clicking noise repeatedly, and the image through the viewfinder was moving up and down rapidly. By rotating the body with the lens attached I was able to somewhat remedy the problem and was able to take shots, but every time the IS is engaged it makes an odd click sound that's different from the usual small click it makes when the IS is engaged. Also the image in the viewfinder shifts dramatically compared to normal operation. After turning the camera off and detaching the lens, the original problem of the repeated clicking and moving of the viewfinder image returns.

How damaged is my IS? I'm already putting together the box to send it to the Canon repair center in VA.

There is no way to know how damaged it is until it's taken apart. From the impact you described hopefully something just came loose and it won't be a huge repair bill.

hard to say, but it does sound like something got hurt

luck of the fall, mine once flew out of my hands 3' across and 2.5' down onto wooden floor and was perfect, IS fine, tested 100% crops to be same as before

Just wondering if anyone had a similar experience with this happening.

My poor lens is sitting at the UPS store now and should be in VA on Wednesday. I feel like part of me is missing

Update: $0 in parts, $158 in labor according to the repair estimate. Right about where I thought it would be.
