One of the first prints I ever made. I shot this with a Canon powershot sx100 digital camera back in 2008, when I just first started learning about photography. Since then and thousands of dollars in gear later...I never quite got this look, ever again. I have never seen more life, more community and more vigilance from the great North American White pelican when I shot this. The lead pelican staring us down is almost challenging the viewer not to mess with their home - the rapids of the drowned, slave river, NWT. At the time there was a lot of debate in the news about building a massive hydro dam on this river. Fortunately it didn't, and in my opinion if they have any respect for the people of the region who have lived with the river as long as they have - it should not happen. Behold "The Determination Of The Crew" - featuring a species of bird who have been in their current state for over 20 million years...determined to protect their homes from human's greedy intervention.
