^^^ And the end result is that it is easier, and cheaper, to produce the image to the sensor on a crop body with the EF-S design that it would be to with an EF design. Obviously canon makes a 14 and 16mm (actual) focal length lens (and now an 8 - 15mm) but, clearly, the price is high.
