i just sold one of mine on this forum a few days ago. Mine looks and functions pretty much new. The buyer bought it and said it looks even better then he expected. we dealt locally, though.
So i guess if the listing is locally and you go see the item if it looks good enough and works well. Sure, why not because you don't have to wait for shipping and save the extra money toward the next equipment purchases.

Here is a listing of the recently completed eBay auctions for the 580EX ii. They appear to have sold for between $329-$425 with two which were missng the wide angle diffuser selling for $300.

I don't need a 580EX ii since I have a 550EX, 430EX and 420EX but, the missing w/a diffuser would not bother me since I always bounce my flash.

However, looking it in another direction, if I am careless enough with my equipment to lose an integral part like the w/a diffuser, I might not have generally cared well for the flash...

I paid a pretty high price (I think $385 and $415) for both of my 580's. I think people are willing to pay so much partly because they buy used without checking new prices. I suspect part of the reason for the used price might be that Canon decided to lower the new price at some point and the used market hasn't caught up.

I thought about buying new, but still went used because I've found it very useful being able to switchout my gear for small profits, rather than at a loss, buy buying used as I grow as a photographer.I decided to stay true for that.

I bought a used one a while ago for 340 so I can't complain. I don't think I'd be willing to spend more than $375 used.

for a lens, if new and old are not that much different, i go new. For accessories, if things look good and i can save some bucks, i go for used.

to the OP, new price for it is good right now. YEAH, go for it.
