i'm thinking of selling my 5d and upgrading to mk ii. it seems that a mkii costs about $2250 brand new. when mkiii's come out, they will probably cost like $3600, right? will the release of the mkiii have a big effect on the price of mkii's new or used? i imagine the influx of mkii's for sale from people upgrading might bring the price down a bit, but nothing worth waiting that long for, eh?

The 5D2 is a very popular body which is still selling strongly. I don't think a 5D3 is in the offing in the near future. Just MHO.

Regardless of what you read here, no one knows the price point or the release date of the replacement for the 5dmkii.
Focus on what is available now and the price of it. 5dmkii's are high right now, a worthless dollar and the tsunami contributed to the price today. I've been watching them, and there appears to be a small amount of softening in the price from some sellers, but it's not much. Regarding the factors that created the current price, recovery from the tsunami is happening pretty fast, personally - I don't see any hope for the dollar/yen rate to improve in the near term. One bit of good news is Helen (from Adorama) asked one of their buyers if the 5dmkii was still in production - and was told it is.

If you decided you want/need one now, you should buy now.

When the 5D3 is announced you'll probably see a bit of a price decrease for the 5D2 and 5D classic, so whatever you save on buying a 5D2 will probably be lost on selling your 5D classic. So I probably wouldn't wait around for the 5D3 announcement to buy a 5D2.

You need to determine what are the limitations of your 5dc that is holding you back. Is video? High ISO? AF? fat fingers when comes to sensor cleaning? POTN signature?

Upgrading for upgrading's sake is poor judgment and a waste of money. That's my 2 cents.

i shoot live music in mostly **** light. i want the increased cropability, as well as better high ISO performance. i don't need to upgrade, per se, but i would definitely be able to get better pictures.

I was in the same boat you are not too long ago. Had a pristine 5Dc, didnt think the 5D3 was coming anytime soon, didnt really NEED the 5D2, but still wanted it for the high ISO performance and all the other newer generation features I was missing out on. As others have mentioned already, once the price/value drops start happening on the 5D2 they will also start happening on the 5Dc. So it really doesnt matter too much when you do the upgrade as the decrease in values are somewhat relative. I went for it and have been very pleased ever since.

Hard to say, really. The original 5D was released at $3200 I believe, but the 5D MKII was released at $2699, and 3 years later it's still $2499 at reputable dealers.

If Canon makes some revolutionary changes to the next 5D, I think they'll command a higher price for it (possibly closer to $3000), but if it's more of an evolution from the current model (like the 5D MKII was from the original), then I would expect the release price to be only marginally more expensive than the current model.

oh, thanks for this info. for some reason i thought that the mark ii originally cost almost double what it does now. if the mkiii very well could retail for just a few hundred more than what the mkii is currently going for i think i might be best to wait.

It is hard to believe the 5d3 will be a mere evolution from the 5d2. If Canon were to just dump a FF sensor in the current 7d, it will be quite a leap from the 5d2.
Then again, when the 5dc came out there was 0 competition. It stood alone as the only FF camera for mortals. But when the 5d2 came out, there already exist the nikon d700 and sony a900 (later a860). So maybe the 5d3's price might not be that bad.

Yeah, I know... but when the 5D MKII came out everyone just assumed that Canon would at LEAST use the 50D's AF system, and we didn't even get that. I'm not saying Canon won't make the next 5D much better - believe me I hope they do - but it's certainly possible that it won't be as revolutionary as everyone would like. We can only wait and see.
