hey sometimes green box is the only way to do it. I know when my almost 3 year old daughter wants to use the camera I put it in greenbox, but then again a 7d has a bit much on it for her to play with.
what I find funny though is those saying the 70-200 2.8 is heavy and yet my daughter who turns three next month is able to hand hold it attached to a gripped 7d.

I've got to see a picture of that and her shots.

Lots of underexposed JPGs, many with questionable white balance and focus points.

Stupid snobbery aside, I'd agree that Auto is worthless for most situations where you want a "photo". It will, in fact, produce a picture though in most circumstances :)

I actually know a guy that will just stack a few ND filters on his 50 f/1.4 and use "Green box" (for some reason it likes to shoot at f/14 in sunlight otherwise) and he's had some good luck with it.

I tried it once and didn't care for it, I shoot Av 90% of the time w/ natural light and just adjust the EC based on how stuff's light - never been disappointed

The only thing I don't like about green box mode on my 50D is that it doesn't pic the "correct" focus point.

It will choose an acceptable shutter speed above 1/focal length. Of course it uses auto ISO. That's the least important of the exposure triangle and it's already choosing the other two anyway.

Snyderman, well done!

This proves that anyone could buy a dSLR (up to the 5D2/7D bodies) and use it like a $100 P&S!

I always suspected this was true, but would rather put my head in a mangle than try out green box mode!

bannedPermanent ban

I just got back from a 10 day European cruise. The amount of DSLR's was astounding. I actually didn't see one person using a custom function or M mode on ANY of them. They were all in GBM or some automated mode. People approached me and my taped up 5DII and tried to talk to me about gear but I was leaps and bounds ahead of them when I started talking about HAMSTTR, dynamic range, histogram usage etc etc. At times, I was using all 3 custom functions.....they're really priceless.

mmm whats al the fuss about. I have used the green box, I thought it would shoot some jpegs like my previous cameras did in green mode, but got home and found they were in RAW anyway. have to say that they were well exposed and spot on focus wise but I generally shoot in AV mode. I've been told by some of my snobbier photography mates that shooting AV is auto as well LOL

We all have to start somewhere. My 'Glass House' contains so many bungled photos that I dare not 'Throw Stones' at any novice.

WHAT!!! All 5D mkii owners should use the green box mode exclusively!

The 5D mkii is an expensive camera becoz of all the sophisticated electronics inside!

SO use them often, or your money ain't well spent!!!
