Well then! This week we have had clear skies here in town as the moon has gone from full to half-full, and I've been able to walk out onto my deck at various times past midnight as it's gone through the stages. So, Monday night, Tuesday night, Thursday night and then Saturday night, I "Shot the Moon", mostly using my 1D3, the 100-400 and a 1.4x TC:

Monday night (early Tuesday) it was almost full:

Tuesday night (3:00 AM Wednesday) more shadow showed more nice detail:

Thurday night/Friday morning again more detail:

And then, last night/this morning, it was the half moon. Venus was being a sidekick.

I started with the moon low and brownish at about midnight:

I then put on my 16-35 lens and got this "bright shot" of the moon, Venus, and the "environment":

I decided to break out my trusty old 30D to get my next set:

And then it was back to my 1D3 to finish up about 4:30 AM:

That's a nice little project and it shows how much it changes from day to day. Do you think that you could go for a whole 28 day cycle ?
Pity you didn't point your longer lens at "Venus" that morning. You would have come away with a shot of Jupiter and moons. :)

Heh! I really haven't tried anything like that and I doubt that my setup would get much -- the moon shots themselves are 100% crops!

I did get a 5th little session this morning (did you see that thread?) but as far as trying to go a 28-day route, well, hmm...getting up at all the crazy hours this week has me feeling, well, odd:)!

I didn't say it would be big. :-)
The crater in the middle of your last shot above (Copernicus) is about the same size as Jupiter so you should be able to get it as a disk and you may see some banding. Expose for a bit longer and you'll get some moons. The downside is that you have to get up early again.

Ah, well then! But the bad news is that the clear skies are gone (for now). In this area, some overcast is pretty much a given. But, if I get another good clear night while Jupiter is around I'll have to see what I can do! The only shots I got with Jupiter in them were wider, including the moon.

It looks to me like youve over sharpened your images... Still, nice and clear pictures

Hey, well, I like giving the moon a generous boost of sharpening to really bring out the details on a closely cropped digital image!

And in other news, the clouds have turned to a light, steady rain...
