Lee 4x4 CPL Falls out of Filter Holder

Hi everyone -

I was out shooting a waterfall the other night and as I was carrying my tripod a few feet to where I wanted to make my next composition, I noticed my Lee 4x4 CPL was hanging half way out of the Lee filter holder. At the exact instant I saw it, a slow motion sequence of my filter falling to the river rock unfolded before my eyes.

My camera tripod and lens were far more important than the filter so I didnt risk them to do any acrobatics to save my filter but luckily it didnt shatter when it hit the ground - two corners of the filter are chipped pretty well but nothing that will affect IQ.

I went home and immediately tightened the screws on the slots, but it still seems more loose than I'd like. Are all the Lee holders this way - if so, what have you done to avoid the problem?

Yes, especially regarding the polarizer.

You can line the edges of the filter with electrical tape. That'll do the trick.

Another forum member - Jacobsen1 - recently lost his 4x4 CPL due to the same turn of events. Mine is still tight but you are the second person in a short span of time to report the holder springs loosening up. I just got back from a 4-day shoot in Sedona...was stacking three filters in the Lee holder at various times (GND+ND+4x4 CPL)...never had any come loose, not even when using the Big Stopper in the mix. Something that I'll keep my eye on for sure (especially since I was in knee-deep moving water at times...not a good place to drop one).

mine is really solid too but a guy i know, ben, had his fall out and shatter. he fixed the problem with a couple screws (something like a 2 dollar fix), head over to the lee 4x4 circular polarizer thread for the details.

woops, totally skipped over this. sry for essentially saying the same thing.

i bought the same screws as ben did to prevent the cpl from sliding. i used my cpl and lee holder once and the damn thing started slipping even after i tightened the slot screws. saw ben's post and couldn't be any happier.

or use the 4mm guides. they have a thumbscrew on the side of them and it holds the filter in place nicely
