Some of you may not care, but I snapped this shot of my Dad this evening on our veranda with natural light. I have been trying to get some really nice shots of my Dad lately, as he has been diagnosed with ALS. (Lou Gehrig's Disease) It's getting to be a hard road for us, and this is just the beginning.

I never really took many photos of my family before, but lately I have been just so I have the photos for the future and for the memories. Anyways Tonight he was out barbequing some steak, his favorite thing to do is barbequing. Managed to grab this shot of him, Would like to know what you guys think. The moral to this post is to take as many shots of your loved ones as possible, you never know when it will be to late.

In this shot you can see the sadness in his eyes, He gets so frustrated that he can't use his arms and hands like he used to, and it really bothers him. I think this photo shows his true emotion. What do you think of it?

Took this with my 1DmkII and EF 70-200mm F/4L
Any C&C is welcome!

This is a great shot! It really shows the depth of his being. It really speaks to who your father is and it's so expressive. It's a great capture as isn't that a BBQ in the background? It's well composed, technically is well lighted and frankly, I like it. Bravo.

Thanks Dano, I feel the same way about the photo. Also yes that is a BBQ in the back ground.

Thank you so much!

if BBQ-ing is/was a big part of his life or something he loves to do I'd get closer to it and use a smaller aperture to highlight it. I'm sorry to hear about the ALS, I have friends effected by it, and did my biology final on it last year, it's a terrifying disease.

It sure is, My father has been a big influence on my life. He taught me everything I know about cars, computers, and everything. It's a shame to see him barely be able to feed himself, and get dressed. I wish they could find a cure for it.

You know I actually didn't even intend on getting the BBQ in the frame, Didn't even notice it while taking the shot until after I imported into Lightroom haha.

Really great idea. I agree with you on the fact that many of us "photographer" doesn't really take much pictures of our family or not enough probably. Also sorry to hear about ALS, you should try to stalk him some more and share some more pictures with us =) i don't know if anybody thought about doing this kind of thread Show us your family i think it'd be a great idea good luck for the future! to you and your dad.

Excellent picture, both technically and in capturing your dad.

Make the most of your time, as you are doing.

As I have learned, there is no "bad" shot of a family member. Above that, the photo is fantastic!

Nicely done.

Yes, please take as many of your family as you can muster now. We certainly do not know how long we have them. I lost my father 18 years ago and regret not having more pictures of him.

Interesting shot. His eyes look sad, but there also seems to be a hint of happiness. Thats what I get from it anyway. Id love to see this in black and white.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments!

Spiiral, I added a B&W version to the original post. I am not a very good B&W converter. Let me know what you think of that! :)

The B&W is a nice touch but doesn't evoke the same emotion of the color. I came back for another look. The color shot is masterful. The bokeh in the background knowing the circumstances of your dad is very interesting...thought provoking. DN
