So lately I've been noticing that my flash doesn't quite work with my mk2n.
the only time it works is when its at an angle, I have two 580ex2 and they both work when only tilted to the right. Both my flash works just fine with the 5d2. Do you guys have any experience like these? Any remedy for this problem?

My thought would be hotshot corrosion, are the contacts on the hotshot clean?

haven't had theat problem myself but I'm picking it's because of loose screws, see: http://www.conraderb.com/flashrepair/ (external link) for a fix.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

It sounds like the connection between camera and flash isn't secure.

All contacts are clean, I always clean it.

Joeseph, thanks for the link. I tried the paper clip remedy, but still doesn't work.

rick, it's somewhat tight, but I have to push the flash a bit to the right in order for
it to work. both my flash units does the same thing.

My flash would lose connection when I pointed my 1Ds2 downward. I noticed the my flash would move left to right just a little bit. So, I thought something was wrong with the flash. Then, I took the flash off, looked at the hotshoe and then I tried to lift up on it and sure enough, the right side would lift up just a tiny bit. So, I slid the clip off, tightened the two loose screws on the right side, and the problem was solved. The clip will slide backwards, towards the eye cup when it comes off. You just needs something thin enough to get under the front of the clip (the front side of the camera). Once you slid it off there are four screws and you just need to tighten then. You will need a jeweler's Phillips head screwdriver because standard screw drives are NOT small enough.

If the screws are not loose, then there must be a problem with the flash.

Hmmm....when you say you have to push both your flash units to the right, what do you mean? Are they loose in the hot shoe and you can literally shift them left to right? I realize we are probably talking about a fraction of a mm here, but is that what you are saying?

The flash should be snug in the hot shoe, you should not be able to move it left or right.

no movement at all...but i have to push the flash unit the right just a bit. maybe the weight of flash and battery shifts it a lil bit and loose contact...

That is strange that it happens on both flashes. I have one 580ex ii and one 430exii, but both lock in place and do not move at all when they are in the hot shoe.

Is the hot shoe bent a little bit? I'm sure you have looked at that, but if the hot shoe is screwed in tight and it is not moving at all, and both flashes are doing the same thing, I can't help but wonder is maybe the hot shoe itself got bent just a tad. If it was one flash then maybe it would be the flash, but if it is both flashes I would assume that there is something with the hot shoe. If it is screwed in tight, then I would assume maybe it is bent just enough to lose contact. I'm just throwing guesses out here. If we throw out enough of them, we'll eventually get you to the problem.

If you stick with something long enough, the solution will present itself. Glad to hear you got it fixed.
