I set my Tammy 17-50 to 24mm (and used tape to secure the zoom ring) to see how it would look like to walk with a 35mm prime for when I buy my 5D in a couple of months.

It was all fun and dandy until I took the tape off and tried to zoom the lens back. BIG PROBLEM. Seeing that the lens extends when zooming, I guess I must've jammed it when putting it back in my bag countless times.

It is very hard to turn the zoom ring; perhaps even to the point of impossible without breaking something internally.

Has this ever happened to anyone? I know its user error and "maybe" the lower-end construction of the Tamron. I managed to set it back to 17mm, but now I only have a 17mm prime.

Can anyone offer some advice?

So a note of caution: if you have a zoom that extends while zooming, then becareful when you "set it" at a certain length.

Have you checked your zoom lock?

What kind of tape did you use and how long did you leave it on??
I've used that trick several times on different lenses but never had any problems once I removed the gaffers tape.

As long as there is no physical damage on the lens, you can probably make a warranty claim. I've never done this with my lens, so I couldn't really say.

Gaffers tape is a specialized tape (looks like duct tape but it isn't) which doesn't leave residue on anything to which you attach it. It is expensive but worth the money for certain uses...

Yea I have. I made sure its unlocked.

Could it be the kind of tape? I used good 'ol scotch tape at home. I left it on for the whole day as I walked around and snapped pictures.

I'll see if I can make a warranty claim. If not, then I'll just brave it and try to take it apart

Sounds like the glue from the tape made it stick. But after just one day it shouldn't be that hard to move it. If you can feel tape residue where the tape was, then that's your problem.

That's exactly what it sounds like. In heat, that adhesive gets soft and will find its way down into crevices. It will make things feel gummy, or worse when it cools off. That's why I chose the gaffy stuff.
