Hi, found this on the net and not sure if this works. I don't have a 60D yet but I am ordering via the CLP this week. *fingers crossed*

I know that to get the shutter count, you need the gPhoto2 utility but it takes a lot of effort to get the shutter count.

I saw this posted on the net and would like to ask if anybody tried this. Sounds simple to do.

Here is what you need to do to get 60D to work with EOInfo. These instructions are for Windows

This method is same for 7D and other eos cameras that not work with EOS info.

Install the latest version of EOS Utility (download from internet or install from the CD that came with 60D).

Go to "C:\Program Files\Canon\EOS Utility" or wherever you have installed EOS Utility and copy EDSDK.dll.

Go to "C:\Program Files\astrojargon.net\EOSInfo" or wherever you have installed EOSInfo and paste. This will copy the EDSDK.dll from canon utilities and overwrite the one existing in EOSInfo. You can also do a drag-n-drop between two folders, make sure to hold down Ctrl key while dragging and dropping so that file is copied and not moved (or else canon utilities wont work). If you want to be extra careful then make a backup of exiting EDSDK before copying.

You are now set to use EOSInfo with 60D. Apparently 60D is incompatible with the older version of Canon SDK that EOSInfo uses. Fortunately no change in EOSInfo is needed to use the new version and a drag-n-drop works fine. Someday EOSInfo will be updated and it would work right out of the box with new canon cameras.

That'd be a NO on the 7d.

Thanks for the feedback va_rider!

So I presume that it won't work on 60D too. Oh well, guess I had to do it the hard way to get the shutter count.

Nope with a 60D either. Reads everything but shutter count.

if you have CS5 or a Flickr account or Picasa you may be able to extract the shutter count using those..I have not tried them on the 7D and 60D though...

here's how to do it on CS5

The 7d is too stately of a machine to worry about such petty things as "shutter count" ... that's for "common" cameras.

I guess all new Canon cameras don't really report shutter actuation now :(

There is one utility that works but you have to be willing to dabble in playing with Linux.

You can get 60D shutter count with Magic Lantern firmware...

Non-OEM firmware can be risky. I would strongly advise anyone considering this to be prepared that if something goes wrong it could result in a costly repair trip to Canon.

Yes it can and everyone has now been warned; however there has not been a single reported case of a "bricked" camera with the ML firmware.

Here my experience.

I've been using the Canon SDK (Software Development Kit) to write software for EOS computers since I got my xTi (5 years ago). The cameras haven't changed. The SDK (as of about 2008/2009) no longer contains the function call to get the shutter count. Canon has taken it out.

So, if you use the authorized Canon SDK since 2008 to write software you can no longer get the shutter count.

However, Magic Lantern and 400Plus (the former CHDK Hack) use other methods to communciate with the camera by dumping the firmware and looking at the code. It looks like the fellow that wrote the astrojargon stuff (EOSInfo) uses the Canon Authorized SDK and so he has to live with its limitations.

I've played around a bit - taken an older version of the SDK that still has that shuttercount function in it and tried to get the count from my 5Dc and xTi and failed. I'm not enough of a hacker to go any further than that - the work I do requires me to use the authorized SDK so thats what I'm sticking with.

Also, I've used the xTi HACK for 4 years and never had a problem that couldn't be resolved by re-setting the camera settings and uninstalling the hack firmware.

Just thought I'd share my experience

EDIT
: Thought I'd add that the EDSDK.dll mentioned at the top of this thread is the runtime module for the Canon SDK
: Thats why I suggested that the EOSinfo program is limited to what Canon allows us to do. Which doesn't include getting the shutter count.
