Does your imac have a USB 3.0 port? If so, get an inexpensive USB 3.0 card reader...much faster than firewire 400 OR 800.

Or if not, you could get an inexpensive USB 3.0 adapter card or similar doohickey for your imac.

I know B&H sells an inexpensive usb 3.0 card reader for around $30 or so.

Just a thought.

Macs and reasonable prices go together like oil and water. Good luck.

Ok, a translation for you. Be prepared to spend to accomplish what you wish. That's called reality which I believe is closely related to "real." It's the price you pay to have a system that "just works" as I so often hear it referred to. I guess it isn't working so well for you right now though. Sometimes in our euphoria we overlook the little things that add up to be a pia in life. That's reality. There is a price to pay for every decision made in life. Even the ones like pc vs. mac. Unreasonable prices is one of the prices you pay for mac. Getting upset over it won't help you at all. It's a continue to pay the price or get out situation. That in a nutshell is my "real" suggestion for you. Good luck with it.

ok luciddreeamer ... thanks for the sarcastic response. just saying "oh you have a mac your screwed" is not a real answer. and saying use a usb 3 or firewire 400 doesnt help me either because of my Imac limitations so those are not real solutions. I am not afraid to spend $$ My original post was referring to any suggestions anyone might have for a fire wire 800
And I love my IMAC 27 well worth the $$ for a quality machine

I use the Sandisk Extreme FireWire Reader, it does both 400 and 800. I bought it for under $100.00 a year and a half ago, but they don't make them anymore. I've only seen one place that still has them in stock, but they are asking $189.99 for them. A couple of other companies use to sell them as well, like Hoodman and Lexar. Not sure where to find them anymore? I know one of our local camera shops had a bunch of the Hoodman firewire card readers in stock last year so you might be able to find one around where you live too? http://www.google.com …8d9d53c2&biw=1600&bih=690 (external link)

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

The big problem with thunderbot right now is the lack of external devices. As I remember there is a third port thunderbolt hub that has FW 800 ports...but not USB 3. So for the IMAC I would think use a FW800 reader in a native FW800 port....or via a thunderbolt hub if you can find one. Last resource is old slow USB 2. Use USB 2 for keyboards and mice or maybe printers.

I would not hold my breath for a native thunderbolt card reader. ;)

You asked for a cheap alternative as if you had researched it and found nothing. Saying you have a mac you're going to pay too much is a legitimate answer. Unlike your response about wanting "real" answers.

Really happy for you that you liked spending the money for your mac. But saying it won't work for you and you need a cheap fix isn't exactly a ringing endorsement in my opinion. I really don't understand why you'd try to go cheap if the money spent on it was well worth it. My answer was spend the money it takes since money seems to be no problem for you. After all you spent a bunch for that mac to begin with. It is part of being a mac and not a pc.

Ebay is probably the way to go now, I got a Lexar 800 for 125.00, they go for 125.00-140.00 right now.

thank you randy and mcasan
and you luciddreamer... why so bitter. Did steve jobs come over to your house and take a dump on your front porch?
Did I say cheap? i said reasonably priced. and did i say my mac doesnt work? i said usb 3.0 and fire wire 400 dont? usb 2.0 is fine and fire wire 800 is fine too. that is why i was asking for any advice. that is what this forum is for right? ive seen the 800 from $39-$200 therefore reasonably priced would be around $100. I know i can go buy a usb for 2.0 for $20 but as you have noted i like quality things.

it doesnt really matter what you think of mac that wasnt the question i was asking. but look out they are currently the most valuable company in the world. millions of people cant be as bitter as you.

Back on topic - I recently purchased the Synchrotech FW card reader and am very pleased with it, performs as well as the Sandisk FW reader it replaced - $65 plus s&h. Sorry I don't have the link available, you can look up a review on
Terry White's Techblog.
Regards,
Eric

Bryan, as soon as I retire....we are heading back to Mac. I had my first one in 1984. ;)

Do a search on thunderbolt adapters....I think you will find a few out there to FW800. One for eSATA could be used for external drives and an Adaptic card reader. Of course the best of all would be an adapter to USB 3. Then you could use the Lexar USB reader that does CF and SD.

And don't get too upset about people ragging on Mac's That is a clear indication that they do not have a clue what they are talking about and just think if they should loud enough someone will listen and thing that they know something.
