Are there any rumors of the newest cameras (5d3, 1ds4) that state that video will have autofocus yet? I feel like the technology is already there since they have years of camcorder experience. I'm thinking they could have a touch screen since all devices today have touch screens and you can just select where you want it to focus and it will do so very fast! Kinda like their P&S cameras but mixed with video.

I hope the rumored announcement in october reveals something to this matter! Video in dSLRs is the future of indie film developers like myself.

I can't imagine contrast-detection AF be much faster than what they have been in recent past. If you truly need AF during video shooting for your DSLR, then you best look at Sony's latest releases. The translucent mirror is a much better method.

Doesn't mean we can't read about alternatives. There are plenty of active members here who shoot Nikon :D

I don't think most film makers want camcorder type auto focus. Seems like the film industry is pretty happy with current video-enabled DSRLs and high quality glass.

Soccer moms, and people like me (shooting family video) would like real AF in our Canon cams, but that does not seem to be on the immediate horizon.

When dealing with big sensor video cameras (like a 5D or even APS-C), AF in video is really hard to do right.

Well if canon doesn't implememt af in video they will fall behind in the video category. I have been waiting for af for a while and so have others. Nikon af is not good enough to be even used. So far only sony can do it right

I think the mkiii will offer significant improvements in the area of video. It won't interest me, but there are lots of people who buy these cameras for their video capability.

I am a Canon shooter. I recently purchased a Sony SLT AV55, and it has AF during video

Or try checking out Panasonic GH2. It also has a big improvement on moire control compared to canon.

If they choose to go the touch screen route, it better be in addition to the standard controlls... Cameras with just the touchscreen on the back are HORRIBLE to deal with IMO.
