Recently I had some issues with my car, and had to sell some gear to help out.

I had a 5DmkII, 17-40L, 70-200 F4L IS, 580 EXII, and a ton of filters, etc.

After fully solving my car problem, the aftermath has left me with the following:

5DmkII, 70-200 F4L IS, 430 EXII, and only the most important filters

Obviously, the 70-200 F4L IS is a fantastic lens, and I really like mine. But it isn't a general purpose lens, per say. Especially indoors or in tight quarters. I need something in the 24-50 range.

So parameter #1, I'm not getting rid of the 70-200 F4L IS.

That leaves me with a 5DmkII to flex around. I know that the glass is more important than the body.

I like the cropability of the 21MP
I like the great performance at ISO 800 and 1600.
I like to richness of the files, dynamic range, color, etc.

I was thinking, trade my 5DmkII for:

A) 5DC and Zeiss 35/2 and Ee-S Focus Screen
B) 5DC and Canon 24-70/2.8L
C) 5DC and Canon 35/1.4

I'm hesitant about the 7D or another APS-C. Mentally, I've come to visualize in 35mm format. While I really don't want to go APS-C and re-learn to visualize focal lengths, it is on the table:
D) 7D and 17-55/2.8

What else should I consider?

Now I'm no pro. You can look at my FLICKR. I loved 'photojournalism', I was extraordinarily happy shooting in Afghanistan. Back in the states, I'm more into landscape and still life stuff I guess. I did an engagement shoot for some friends, and it was fun too though.

99% of what I do is just share pictures here, on flickr, and with friends for self improvement and fun.

I'm thinking, hey, a 5DC is not slouch, and will be just fine for me as long as it is just a hobby. After all, downsized to internet 1024x1024, what is the difference between 12 and 21 MP.

Am I wrong? is the 5DC going to just be a pain and a disappointment?

Why can't you sell your 70-200 F4L?

You should sell your car and get a bicycle. ;)

Even if you sell a 5d2 with an avg street price of $2000, a typical 5dc in good nick is around $1000. The net is only $1000. Is that enough to fix your car?
That excludes the lens you are looking for. I think selling a 5d2 will pay for a 5dc and a 35L let alone leave enough to pay to fix your car.

With that said, there is no point selling your 5d2.

And no, 5dc will not disappoint. You will learn what everyone talks about this "film-like" quality that 5d2 lacked.

Sorry, I may have confused you all.

The car problem is solved. The aftermath left me with only a 5dmkII, and 70-200f4L IS.

I love my 70-200 F4L IS, and it was a gift that I was given while in Afghanistan, so it is more important to me than just a lens.

I'm just trying to turn a 5DmkII into a different body with enough left over for a good moderator wide lens solution

I'd sell it ASAP. Prices and demand are up right now, this might not be the case in a couple of months. When your money situation changes, you can get another one if you need it. It's also possible you'll like the 5dc more, it's a great body for the money.

Edit your signature then.
I'm happy with 5Dc and Nifty-Fifty on it.
I'll be more happy with 5DMKII and Nifty-Fifty or 35F2 on it.
Take it easy.

I love my 5Dc and I get work done with it. my 70-200 f2.8IS is such a workhorse, I keep going back to that lens for any portrait photography I do.

In your case though, if you really want to keep the 5D2, get a 24-105, a lot of people knock it for being a kit lens, but you gotta remember it has IS and the ability to get a nice separation of background at 105mm

edit: saw you previously owned a 24-105, why did you sell it?

I Think I'd personally go with option "B".

You'd have a great camera In the 5D and a great lens in a good focal range with the 24-70

I would just keep what you have and save a little and buy a Canon 17-40mm f/4L used.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I was interested in something wider than 24mm, I wanted to try a super telephoto, wanted to try a prime.

So I sold the 24-105 and got the 17-40 and 300F4L IS.

Since then, I've rented a number of lenses F2 and below, and I've really come to appreciate the value of being able to really open up a lens.

The 24-105 was a great lens nonetheless. I actually bought it straight up when I had a 50D, never came as my kit lens.

I definitely want a lens F2.8 or wider for this one.

You'll get more mileage out of a 5DII IMO.

I'd starve a little and save for a prime (50/1.8 or 50/1.4) or go for a Tamron 28-75.
