What would be the better choice. I have had a 40D for 3 years now and would like to upgrade. I am looking between a 60D or a 7D. I am just a hobbyist/enthusiast - not a professional. Are they both equal as far as IQ?

7D by far! IMO. What do you like to shoot? I played with my friends 7D and now I am thinking of picking up one, and I shoot with a 1D3 and 5D2!!! It has a good feel when it is in your hands, more active, selective focus points from the 9 point sensors. Cleaner sounding shutter, able to control multiple flashes via the body, decent high iso noise. Coming from a 40, I think it would be a huge step.

i doubt moving from a crop to a crop is going to be a noticeably huge step in IQ, especially for a hobbyist. But between the 60D and 7D, I'd choose the 7D because of the AF.

I shoot a 7D, and it's got some awesome features, but you really have to be honest with yourself in whether or not you need it all.

IQ wise? I doubt you'll see a difference between a 60D and 7D. I don't regret getting the 7D and I'm sure you won't either, but to put it in perspective, there's a $700 difference between the two cameras. I would much rather have a 60D and invest in more glass.

Honestly, unless you need video, I would personally stick with the 40D and get better lenses. That will likely go much further to develop your artistry than a new body. I have stuck with the 40D because it has a really beautiful and smooth character to it's RAW files. The new bodies appear rougher to me, especially in the shadow areas. I use my 40D as my main body for all of my professional portrait and boudoir shoots. It's awesome. :)

i have the 40d and was told to keep it and just get better glass, so now i have a 24-105 L and looking at getting the 16-35l soon, i can see there is a big difference in the image quality on my first lens and hope the next will be as good or better.

and i have also found out how the live view works as well

The 60d has the same sensor (ie high iso performance) and also has the built in wireless flash control. IMO the only worthwhile feature the 7d has over the 60d is the improved af (including the mfa). The faster fps looks good on paper but it is a upgrade that very few will actually benefit from. There are also a few features on the 60d that are better than the 7d. Don't get me wrong, the 7d is a superior unit, but wow is that a big jump in price for what you get. I just went though this dilemma myself and don't regret the decision I made one bit. Neither does the new L lens I bought with the money I saved.

What is it about your 40D that you feel is lacking?

+1. The 40d is quite a capable camera. Do you need hdslr? What type of photography do you shoot? ID your needs and determine upgrade path.

Upgrading for upgrading sake is stupid and a waste of $.

I upgraded from 40D to 7D, when about a year ago +. I have kept the 40D for a backup and 2nd body when that is needed. I love the 40D. Thaat said, I have used the e40D about 3 times since I got the 7
D. For me the biggest improvement in IQ is from the faster more accurate focus system. Including the ability to match each lens to the camera. My awesum 300 f2.8 became even more awesum after matching it to the camera. Focus is dead on with all lenses. My keeper rate for BIF increased with every lens iI use for that. The speed and accuracy is really good. (OH! I think I mentioned that.) There are other benifits also, low light, easier to crop without loosing too much resalution. Oh that may be true of the 60D also. Any waay I use my 7D everywhere and have no known need of better lbody anytime soon. OH! Did I say my 7D is the best camera I have owned in 50-60 years of photo happiness. Best to you in your decision, they are both good cameras.

I also upgraded from a 40D to a 7D over a year ago. I went with the 7D over the 60D for the follwoing reasons:

1. Better auto focus system
2. Button layout and ergonomics were much closer to my 40D
3. Compact Flash instead of SD cards, so I could still use my existing CF cards
4. Didn't want an articulating screen
5. Three custom mode buttons, just like the 40D
6. Better viewfinder

From my old 40D, the biggest improvements for me have been the AF system, improved high ISO performance, and the higher resolution -- allowing me to crop some wildlife shots where even a 400mm lens does not provide enough reach.

not everyone will break it down and analyze all the logical steps for an upgrade, especially an enthusiast. We spend $$$ on our hobbies because we strive to achieve the best; thats why its a hobby and passion. Plus, its fun to explore the better capabilities of better gear.

exactly. a wasted $$ is only wasted paying say for example, a parking fine/ticket. But spending $$$ on a new item related to a hobby? lol
