I have been wanting to go full frame since I purchased my first DSLR; an XT in 2005. It just hasn't been something I could afford to do. Now, like many out there, I am waiting to see what will happen with the new 5DIII. In the mean time I am jonesing for a full frame body. I am thinking about picking something to tie me over in the $1000 range which basically means either a 1Ds classic or a 5D classic. I currently shoot with a 50D (w/ grip) and I really like the layout, large LCD, customization, and feel of it. I like the idea of the weather sealing on the 1Ds because I shoot mostly outside. My areas of interest are landscape, equine portraits and events, and travel. Which of these two would suit me better and why?

5Dc is a fantastic body with great IQ and decent high ISO. you won't need the weather sealing unless you really need it and only you know if you really need it.

I like to have weather sealing, but after reading of both cameras review on dpreview I decided to take 5Dc.
Now I have waterproof case if I need to go for real extreme or under water.
I also have 17-40 F4 which is exposable to rain and snow and camera itself could be kept in the dog poo bag. It sounds weird, but it works under moderate snow and rain.

What's a 1Ds classic and 5D classic? I've never heard of those models. They launched somewhere else in the world?

A lot of times, if you don't say classic, some people will assume you are talking about the newer models or even ask which version; so putting "classic" lets those people immediately know that you aren't talking about the 5D2 and 1Ds3

This is strange, you are not newbie (2008, 3K posts) on this message board and 5D-classic thread is on the first page most of the days on this forum at its fifth generation.

And the 1Ds doesn't ?
Could you elaborate a bit more on that
Why is the 5Dc so much better

5dc is quite a bit better at iso 800 and 1600 vs the 1ds IMO.

Never used a 1Ds, but the 5D is AMAZING at high ISO compared to the crop-bodies I've used...

If I didn't already have a 5d, I would go with the 1ds.. 45 point AF, weather resistance, great presence and build. However, I wouldn't get rid of my 5d just to have a 1ds..:)

.... Got some cameras; got some glass ..... I just need one more of each.....

1ds - shoot. wait wait wait wait. Shoot. Wait wait wait wait. shoot.

1ds makes the 5dc feels zippy. And the 5dc is not known for speed.
High ISO of 1ds (or any 1d mkI) is not great either. 1dsII is another matter.

These two pictures are part of a series of 6 shots I took of this leopard who went from a stretching pose to a full out run.
and the 1Ds had no problem keeping up and writing them to the card.

^That's been my experience as well.
I love the IQ of this camera although the ISO is not as good as the 5Dc it is perfectly capable in daylight or even dim lighting
