OK so i'm second shooting a wedding tomorrow, only this will be my first time shooting with a Nikon shooter. Which makes me worry. I only have a 17-55 2.8 and a 28-135 kit lens.. I feel VERY comfortable shooting with the 17-55 and I rarely ever take it off of my camera during events, buti 'm worried about when the sun goes down. ive got a 580exii and plenty of batteries.. but do i need to run in the morning and rent a lens for this event, something like a 70-200 2.8.. ???

Also, if my tripod is in bad condition would it be embarrassing to ask the person im shooting for if he has an extra? After all, he's got a studio no?

any quick advice is appreciated!

thanks,
oren

Shouldnt you be asking this to the main photographer? Tell him exactly what equipment you own and what is required on the day. Once he gives you the brief then maybe think of hiring a lens.

But would be nice to have a zoom lens to cover all lengths.

Unless you are getting paid well, why spend the extra to rent another lens? You were hired as a 2nd, the main should know your equipment by now, and you have a 580exII.

I vote no. Use the 28-135 as long as reasonable, turn up the max ISO a bit, switch to the 17-55 if you are having a hard time with too low of light.

That's unprofessional. I haven't used a tripod at a wedding in years.

^ This..... What do you need a tripod for. Only slows you down.

What you have will do fine. Use the 17-55 for most of your work and look for shots the primary photographer doesn't see. I'm sure he will not depend on you to get key shots since this is your first time. Focus on getting good quality images. Nothings more disappointing than under-exposed, out of focus and blurry shots from a new second. By all means forget the tripod.

Well seeing that the wedding already passed, and the photographer canceled on them, I guess the OP did leave the tripod at home, along with themselves and all of their stuff.
