It's not them who are weird, it's you.

While true, no one has to do anything for an online order, it's all automated computer system until it hits the warehouse. That's why I don't understand the no order placing.

What I don't understand is why I cant just place my online order into a queue and have it fulfilled whenever they reopen.

You keep bringing it up, then say you are not questioning, which is, well, disingenous I'd say.

What you need to pay attention to is that religious discussions are against the rules here, and since the policy that you keep bringing up ties into the relgious beliefs and practices of the business owners, you are seriously advised to stop bringing it up. Please, we don't need this! Do some homework and read up on it, but don't bring it in here!

While I wouldn't want to speak for the specific religious beliefs of the B&H owner, if at Adorama our online ordering system was set up in such a way that we also charged your cc at the time of placing the order, my understanding is that our owner would likewise have made the decision to restrict access to the site to browsing only on Shabbat.

If he did not do so, we would be accepting payments on that day - and Jewish law quite simply forbids such business activities on the Sabbath.

Here you go:

Anyway, I'm really glad this thread happened for two reasons. Anything that gives us opportunities for a greater understanding of each other is great - and I so love being able to share that amazing You Tube video.

Now all I wish is that I could afford a Leica, myself!

What about if they put up a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruv (external link) around the store? :P

I think they're on sale at B&H.

Seriously, start dropping hints to your boss that you would like one as a Hanukka gift.

Tell him that we all here at POTN say you deserve it.

Shalom!

No go, eh? Sorry about that.

Well, there's always Mr. Oster....

One of the reasons I shop at B&H is because I respect their refusal to sell out to commercial interests. There is a food restaurant chain here that does the same thing. They are closed on Sundays period. B&H is a hugely respected business that succeeds because they work hard, provide good value for money and put religious practices before commerce. I like that.

Thank you. This is very gratifying.

And btw, they have closings in the fall and also spring because several major Jewish holidays occur at that time.

Indeed we do and we take pains to post that information. Right now it's here (external link). As each individual event approaches we will place alerts on our home page and throughout our site and post alerts on our Facebook (external link) page and Twitter (external link)accounts too.

We appreciate this is an inconvenience but we want to minimize the impact on our customers.

What I don't understand is why I cant just place my online order into a queue and have it fulfilled whenever they reopen.

There is more than one interpretation of how an observant Jew must observe Sabbath. I'd be wildly out of line to say one's right and another's not, especially since I am the least observant person alive today. Wikipedia's "Activities prohibited on Shabbat (external link)," may be instructive. Our owner's preference is not to engage in commerce at all on Sabbath. That does not mean our way is right and another is wrong, just that this is our owner's preference and I for one respect it. While I'm not a big fan of observance per se I am of integrity and character.

Johnny Caspar in Miller's Crossing: I'm talkin' about friendship. I'm talkin' about character. I'm talkin' about - hell. Leo, I ain't embarrassed to use the word - I'm talkin' about ethics.

While it is undeniable that when we began this practice our system would charge the customer's credit card when an order was placed, that has changed. B&H now charges a customer's card when the order ships. The Sabbath practices remain because of our owner's preference.

No inconvenience at all.

Also, B&H is open on Labor Day - how many people do that! Guess where I'll be next Monday?

I hope all the POTN folks here realize how valuable both Helen and Henry are to the photography community. And, not just here!

Back before we had forums like this I was active in one or two "Newsgroup" threads for photography, and Henry was there, helping folks out with B&H-related needs. That was a long time ago!

Henry, if you see this, how long ago did you become active as a B&H Internet presence? For the life of me I can't nail a date down for my activity.

Helen, how long have you been doing this?

You guys are great resources!
