If I live to be 100, I will never understand why a couple does this. Is there some sort of passive aggressive thing going on? He's mad at her for spending so much, or she's mad at him for micro managing the wedding budget, I don't know. It is so immature to me. It is not cute, it is not funny, it is not "playful", it is just immature to me. I suppose the groom can just go in to the bathroom and wash his face, but the poor bride who probably spent $150 getting her make up done, ends up spending the rest of the evening looking like the bride of Frankenstein. AND her face is sticky and she smells like buttercream icing. I attended a wedding recently and there was a cake free for all and I'm just venting.

It saddens me when they don't get messy. Screw the hair & makeup...the ceremony's over. ;)

I just don't see the point of it...what is the meaning of even feeding cake to each other?

I agree with you, Sue... I think it is just poor taste. However, my recently married daughter & son-in-law really wanted to do it. So, when we had the reception 4 weeks after the wedding (wedding was in Hawaii), they changed into grubby clothes and smashed a small cupcake because they wanted it for the pictures. It was the last event of the evening so there was no real damage for the rest of it.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I prevent it but still allow for some messiness. I tell brides and grooms to close their eyes and, at the same time, try to feed each other the cake. They love it, they get a little messy (but not deliberately), and it makes the pictures cute. And then if the bride gets cake on the groom's face I always tell her she has to kiss it off now. That also makes for cute pictures.

Why not? haha. IMO it shows the playfulness of the couple. I'm absolutely going to do it! I do understand that there is overkill though

In my experience, most brides and grooms really have no idea what they're going to do once they get up there. I think cake smashing is more a result of spur-of-the-moment-peer-pressure (since most cake cuttings occur about 2 hours after the free drinks have begun flowing) and not something the bride and groom would have done had they not been egged on by their drunk friends and family.

Im not into an outright foodfight. However, i do tease them and egg them on a bit to get great expressions. Again this is a situation where you talk to the couple about it before it happens. I tell them im going to tease them and have a lot of fun when it time for feeding the cake to each other. The photos are always priceless and my favorite part of the reception.

Establish ground rules before it happens with the couple

1- groom always feeds first and if he slips and gets a little bit of frosting on the nose he has to lick it off

2- bride ALWAYS goes 2nd- this tends to keep the grooms on better behavior

we have never had a food fight yet. most that happens is cake in the nose and cheeks, chin area-----photos are fantastic

talk to them in advance. It works.

It doesn't end there, I have been married for a few years and I still duck food, pots, and shoes.
