First, don't expect weather suitable for photography. We were very lucky on our trip, and we were told so by the cruise ship crew and the locals in the ports of call that we talked too. Comments like "We only can see those mountains about 50-60 days of the year" were common. Good luck.

cruise or land trip?

you will definitely need a wide angle and a zoom of at leat 400 for the wildlife.

clouds and light rain are common. do not let them keep you inside, dress in layers with lightweight rain gear and go.

alaskan directories are below from a few of our trips up there

I've been up there a few times and lived in Anchorage for a decade.. The weather is seldom good for photography...

but, knowing that the skies will be cloudy and dark, and color contrast will be nil, you can keep close and tight to bring out some detail.. big landscapes generally look muddy unless the sky opens up to blue sky... it will periodically..

.... Got some cameras; got some glass ..... I just need one more of each.....

thanks for the tips, I just return today.

g8trgr8t ~ I went on the alaska cruise

LarryD ~ it was a bit late for me to ask my friend for his 100-400, but I did tag along my wide angle. to not bad. Weather is not an issue, it was the earthquake that I ran into (while on the cruise) got a bit crazy.

haha, I will post some in the next 2 days ( need to rest, still a bit dizzy after getting off the cruise)
