Hi everyone -

I took off this morning around 5AM to make the sunrise at Split Rock Lighthouse, which is about 45 minutes north of my house. I got to my spot just as the best light was starting, however it was unfortunate that the skies were featureless for the most part. Maybe next time, right?

Here are my 3 favorites from the shoot:

And Ellingson Island, which is behind the camera in the frames above - I just liked the way the morning light made the shoreline glow:

As always, C&C is welcome and encouraged. Thanks!

Really nice colors in the lighthouse shot (I wouldn't exactly call it featureless :D ) . Just a thought with all the black in the frame...maybe crop out the bottom silhouette?

Touche, not exactly featureless - but not exactly the most exciting sunrise in the world either. Slightly overcast makes for better sunrises and sunsets IMO.

As for the bottom silhouette, I see your point - but my little rock statue would have gone to waste!

Excellent series, Brett. Much better sky than I was able to get my last time there. I have the feeling it will get better as the year progresses.

Thanks everyone.

Stan - I agree, the skies will get better as we get into fall but great ones can be had even in the middle of the summer. A fellow FM member was nice enough to show me the sky that was there the morning before I got there - see the 8/26 split rock images...so jealous.

That's one of the real challenges of "successful" landscape shooting and why shooters often go back to the same place over and over again...you can plan everything out to the last detail and the actual time of day to get the best shot, only to be at the mercy of what nature deals you in the end. That's what keeps it so interesting.
