This is not about SilverEfex being a good or bad software - it is about when to get it and if it is detrimental for developing my skills.

I am still a beginner - learning how to achieve a good picture. Developing a taken picture in a post-processing step (Lightroom) is part of the fun, because it helps me to explore the possibilities and limitations of the my picture taking skills.

I am fascinated by the abilities of producing very strong b&w pictures with specialized software like SilverEfex. However, from a didactical point-of-view I am not sure if this is a good moment to get it. Does a software like that help me or inhibit my learning process? Is it a means to explore the possibilities or just makes me lazy because after pressing the button everything looks just perfect?

Any thoughts or comments on this?

By the way: price is not an issue due to the special conditions I can get it.

Software, whatever the brand, can help an image, if it is properly used. It cannot turn a rotten apple into a piece of art.

Nik Silver Efex is amazing software. It will make your work (at whatever level you're at) look its best and may just get you excited enough to continue refining your skills.

Well there is only so much you can do with your camera. Exposure and composition being the main two. As long as you continue to work on that I think any type of software you use to enhance your images can only help you with your learning process. You want to be creative and have some fun.
