7D gone, bring on the 5DIII.

The 7D was one of the first shipments back in late Oct 2009.

There's been multiple threads debating the merits of the 7D and 5DII. What it got down to me was that I wasn't shooting sports nor doing as much birding as I though I would (400 F5.6 is going to get moved). I liked the feel of the 7D and how nice it integrated with my 40D and 5DII, but I didn't need the AF system. The flash commander was nice, but only from a convenience standpoint, I wouldn't depend on it for a money gig.

The 5DII suits my current subject matter and I find the images are a level above.

Currently that leaves me with a 40D as a back up, I'll be interested in purchasing the 5DIII if it has a few of the improvements that have been talked about. I still wouldn't be needing the 7D AF system, but better perimeter AF point sensitivity at least. I'm hoping they keep the layout, menuing, etc. similar to the 40D, 50D, 7D and 5DII, it makes it easy to switch bodies.

Don't get me wrong, the 7D is a great camera. But, given the funds and the subject matter that work well with FF, the 5DII is just a better option.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Congrats! It's going to be an easy upgrade. I have both, 7D and 5DII. I couldn't give either up. You enjoy the FF!

5D3? Do you have any information I don't? :D

I don't have an expectation. I just happen to have a friend that was very interested in getting a 7D and so it worked out.

Thanks Suzy

I've followed some of your comments regarding the 7D and 5DII, I fully concur, near perfect combo if you shoot the things they each are geared for.

So you're going to miss out waiting for technology to arrive. You could be waiting a long time.

I'm not missing out on anything. I just really never used the 7D when I had the 5DII to grab.

And, to all those waiting for the 5DIII instead of getting the 5DII, you're missing out on some great shooting.

I'd have kept the 7D as your backup and gotten rid of the 40, if it was me...

Either way, at least you still have your Mk II.

Personally, I still don't think we're to see a 5D3 until this time next year. I could be wrong, but I've been saying that date when asked this question, for two years now, and with the earthquake, I think it's true even more.

Household rule #1 Never wait for new technology unless you're absolutely sure it's time for an upgrade. In this case the upgrade hasn't occurred yet.

Those who have got the 7D are not missing out because we're doing some great shooting!

I don't understand why so many people on these forums are so convinced that a 5diii is just around the corner. Sure, it's good clean fun to speculate, but making purchasing decisions on rumour and expectation really doesn't make sense. Who knows when a replacement for the 5dii might arrive, what its features might be and how much it will cost? For obvious reasons Canon will conceal all information about a new release until it's ready to ship.

It seems the OP decided to offload a 7D and stick to a 5dii/40d combo, which is just fine - but really, would you make a decision on your only body (or even a backup) on speculation about Canon's release schedule?

I dont understand why people are so quick to jump on the dont wait for new tech boat, the guy had three cameras! He'll survive with two, possibly even be able to photos!

My 2c, smart move. Nothing wrong with the 40d, the 7d is worth a lot more to your pocket.
