So I'm back from 2 weeks of tour of Germany and now I want to rationalize my gear...
So it is:
- canon 7d
- Samyang 8mm
- Sigma 30mm 1.4
- Sigma 50mm 1.4
- Canon 100mm macro IS L
- Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 macro
- Sigma 50-150mm 2.8

With exposureplot I find I used more:
- sigma 50mm 40%
- sigma 30mm 35%
- samyang 8mm 16%
- Canon 100mm 14%

and I mostly make portraits, some close up and some landscape...I'll probably sell the sigma 24-70 because I don't use it, the only zoom I use is the 50-150...
my doubts are about switch to

5d mkII

- sigma 50mm 1.4
- sigma 85mm 1.4
- canon 200mm 2.8 or 135mm f2

What I mean is that I want to reduce my gear...any idea is welcome...

Thanks

Enrico

I could add also a samyang 14mm 2.8...

so would be
14, 50, 85, 200

Why go to a 5DII??? Whats the 7D not do for you?

Simplifying lenses and selling off ones you dont use enough is a fine idea, im going to do that myself probubly shortly, But why switch to a 5DII?

I don't like the idea of those exposure plot things. What if you hardly use your ultra-wide, but the few shots you do get from it are the best shots you get on a holiday?

I agree with you...obviously it's only a software ... but it helps me choosing which focal lens I use more...and it's right because I do a lot of portraits...50 and 85...

Might be..but I'd hold off, the 5DII's replacement will be coming soon

Instead, keep the 7D and reinvest towards different lenses

Keep the Sigma 30mm and 50mm for now, Add the Sigma 85mm and get a Sigma 8-16 UWA to give yourself some UWA flair for landscapes and that...

if you dont have one, a 430EXII or 580EXII with a diffuser would be an excellent addition as well to add fill to portraits and that

I know probably there will be a 5d III or soething like that very soon...and that's why I would wait the new camera to buy the 5d II at a good price...

well if I stay with the 7d I could go for:
- sigma 8-16 or 10-20 (little bit cheaper)
- sigma 30mm
- sigma 50mm
- canon 100mm L or sigma 85mm
- canon 200mm 2.8 L

or sell 30mm and get canon 17-40mm to cover wide and 30mm...

I'm a bit biased toward the Sigma 30mm (I loved mine when I had it), so I'd naturally say to keep that. At the same time, I don't think replacing it with the 17-40 would be a good move. The 17-40 is a great lens all around, but the 30mm lets in four times as much light. Also, it's a full frame UWA, and functions best there. On a crop body, it would fill the role of an average zoom, which the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, or any other lens could fill. For UWA, I'd look into the Sigmas, or the Tokina 11-16mm if you don't mind the short zoom range.

So it could be
7d
tokina 11-16 2.8
sigma 30mm 1.4
sigma 50mm 1.4
canon 100mm macro L or sigma 85mm 1.4
canon 200mm 2.8

I would sell the sigma 30mm and buy a 24L for your current crop. You'll find that this prepares you if you jump to full frame. You may in time start to appreciate wider angle photos to tell stories. Close up shots with major smooth bokeh can be done in a dirty ghetto alley or in a scenic landscape. If you have a beautiful background try to incorporate it in the photo for a story telling photo.

The sigma 24-70 will be a great zoom for a full frame for an amazing walk around lens.

Yes the 11-16 is a reputable UWA lens but you will have to shelve it when you go full frame. If your gonna stick with the 7d for a while and dont mind selling the tokina down the road buy that crop UWA lens.

Since a 5dmk3 is vaporware and does not exist I bought my 2nd 5dmk2. I do not regret it for one second.

I would do 14, 35 L, 85 (any flavor), 135 f2, 1.4X TC if you really need 200 for a all prime setup.

Sony A1, 20mm f/1.8 G, 35mm f/1.4 GM, 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II , 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS, 1.4X TC, Flashpoint flashes
