I think I'm having an issue, but not sure. If I open a file as a smart object in CS-5 when I double click the object it opens it in Camera RAW. I can then adjust in CR hit ok when I'm done and the adjustments are saved. If I save (usually as a TIF) and close the CS-5 file when I open it again the smart object(s) are still there but when I click the icon this time instead of opening in CR it opens as a file in CS-5. I can make changes to this file and save them, but I would prefer it to open this layer in CR. Is there a way to make this happen? Is this an error, or is CS-5 behaving correctly? Any and all advice is appreciated.

In your ACR Preferences under Jpeg and Tiff Handling.
Photoshop > Edit > Preferences > File Handling > Camera Raw Preferences.
Change it to Automatically open all supported Tiffs. That will open Tiff's into ACR before it will in PS.

Thanks Tim. Unfortunately, this didn't resolve the problem. When I double click the layer it still opens in PS and not CR. After it failed to work, I exited the program and restarted it. I didn't reboot (yet) but I wouldn't think I would have to for this. I also saved the file as a PSD and opened it as a smart object, but this too failed to open in CR so I'm not sure it's a TIF issue.

On Edit:
What D Thompson said does work.
Forgot about that, Sorry

Additionally, Russell Brown has scripts for working with layers in ACR you might be interested in checking out.
Scroll down to "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Standard Edition Tutorials" and it will be the first on.

Check this as well in prefs. I ran a test as I never save as a tiff anymore and I can open a RAW file as a smart object. I can then save it either as a psd or a tiff. When I reopen the file, I double click on the smart object and it will open in ACR.

I just tested NEF, CR2 and DNG files. I opened them first in Adobe Camera Raw, did some edits then opened them in Photoshop CS5 as Smart Objects. I then duplicated each background layer, made more modifications, then saved each file as a PSD and a TIFF. In all six instances, when I reopened the PSD or TIFF in Photoshop and double-clicked on the Smart Object icon, the files opened up in Adobe Camera Raw.

My suspicion is that somehow your File Preferences got corrupted and it will probably help to delete the current PREFs files for ACR and Photoshop.

If you're saving as a Tiff or PSD with layers, it won't open into ACR.

I have tried to replicate the problem and I was having a hard time. I added a text layer, a normal layer with a brush stroke in it, an adjustment layer and a copy of the smart object itself and I could still open the image in ACR by dbl clicking on the smart object layer thumbnail. If I did something that forced the layer to be rasterized and then reassigned it as a smart object it would open in Photoshop only. In this example I could open either layer with ACR. I saved several times, quit photoshop and restarted and my results were consistent. I have tried it in both TIF and PSD formats. Maybe if the OP could be a little more specific in the steps he is taking.

OK, this is very strange, but in the process of andswering all your questions and documenting each step as suggested by Sheldon I got about 3/4's to the end of my LONG winded process and it started working correctly. Now, no matter what I do with my smart objects by double clicking them they open ACR. I'm not sure what has changed, since it was nothing I am contiously aware of, but something must have because for the moment it's working correctly. If it jumps back to the land of not working properly I'll let you know, but for now everything appears normal. Very bizzare.......

Thanks for your help guys/gals!
