I was at my local shop checking out this lens and the zoom ring was what I would term very "grabby" Not really stiff but would "grab" or "catch" at several points. The slower I turned it, the more noticeable it was. The salesman who I trust stated it was common with this lens. I also demo'd a 17-50 that was very smooth when zooming. Any comments welcome!

I am no longer a 28-75 owner but I do recall that when I got it the focus ring was VERY stiff early on and gradually loosened up. I can't say for sure this felt anything like a "catch" though. I'd avoid that particular copy!

Smooth here. I did buy mine used however, so drewjoseph may be right about the lens needing to be 'broken in.'

Mine feels smooth, no catching or slowing. Though I can not recall how it was when I first purchased it; it's been a while.

Mine felt a little catchy at first but smoothed out very quickly with use, now its smooth. My 70-300 VC is slightly "sticky" but its already starting so loosen up.

If you pick up another new copy and it does the exact same thing. It is probably normal.

2nd'd. Mine was a little stiff when I first bought it but it got better as time went on. I wouldn't describe it as a "catch", just a bit stiff. I agree to avoid that copy.

It's not the smoothest zoom ring in the world, especially pointed up or down, but no worse than Canons consumer lenses.

thanks for the responses! I will ck to see if he has another to compare before I pull the trigger. All I have to compare right now is my Canon nifty 250 and it is very smooth.

Both my Tamron 17-50mm and Tamron 28-75mm lenses had stiff zoom rings when new.. After some use they loosened up and are now silky smooth.
