Just bring out all my 77mm UV filters, which I collected over the years, and check out how those UV filters affect the image:

It was raining ;)

In the less challenge condition, those UV filters are not too bad:

which B+W CPL did you end up buying? My 77mm kaeseman MRC CPL should be here tomorrow and I'm going to do a little experiment myself. I missed having a CPL for sure though! I was debating on saving the almost $100 and getting the regular B+W CPL in 77mm and 72mm threads but caved for the 77mm with a 72-77mm step up ring for the 35L/135L

I gotta wonder how clean that B+W was . . . I've never seen anything close to that kind of loss of contrast with mine, even straight into the sun, let alone in the soft, diffuse light you get during rain.

Ordered a 77mm & 72mm kaeseman MRC CPL, they will be in Melbourne next week. (I almost lost my B+W ND filter due to my B+W Step-up ring (77EI-72EA)! And took about half hour by a Technician from Camera Clinic, Melbourne to separated two filters. Camera Clinic guy were very kind and did for me FREE!)

My gut feeling is: unless I have to, I don't think that I'll use CPL either.

The B+W one look clean to me, few dust, but no oil or grease:

Tbh, I gave up on the whole UV filter thing a long time ago. If I'm gonna use a filter in front of my lens, it's a CPL,ND, or GND.

Congratulations! ;) If you're not shooting paintball or anything with flying objects, it's safe to say that you will not damage your lens. :)
