I thought this was a White American Pelican. But a co-worker said only a Brown Pelican lives in my area. My Smithsonian FG says otherwise.

He's wrong. American Whites go where they want, all the way to and past the Arctic Circle. :)

From the looks of it to, you have a rookery nearby. That's a bunch of juvies their. They never go far from the hatchery until fall migration.

A sandbar would be good, it it's a big one or maybe an island. They aren't much for nest building. Down here, they build nests on rock wing dams here in the Mississippi River. A nest, and I use that term loosely, consists of a couple driftwood sticks and maybe some seaweed type plants and an egg in it. :)
