Good on you,

donations for worthy events is a whole different kettle of fish, I too have happily donated my time for charitable group even when I was offered payment as a way of giving back to my community.

Great decision Neil. I admire you and your honesty.

There are too many money-hungry people in this world as of today and sometimes it's not about the money and this is definitely one of those cases.

Some people are truly money-hungry but others need money because they're hungry. I don't judge anyone who requires payment for their service/product. If you look at a lot of charities, the top dogs get paid for their services - sometimes quite handsomely as if the charity is a Fortune 500. It's not like everyone donates their time. I don't see why a photographer should give it away while the executives and the board are being paid salaries.

If it's one of those extremely rare true charities where everyone...and I mean everyone...is donating their time, money, services, whatever they have to offer then I don't think it's right for anyone to insist on payment. I do think they have a right to and should not be guilted for opting to not provide their services/product/money when asked though.

In other words why should a photographer who can barely make rent be expected to donate to a cause headed up by someone who owns a yacht and two vacation homes, no matter what the name of that cause is?

There are many charities worth giving images to. The key is to pick the ones you support, ones that are worthy, and not buckle just because they mentioned not for profit or charity. Some deserve, some don't. Smart photographers will do their research and know the difference.

Good choice, nice image, perfectly done.

I agree to a point. Charities need to be run efficiently and to that extent they are just like any other business with the exeption that their profits go to the charitable cause they are supporting. In this case I was offered payment but I chose not to accept it. I visited the arboretum not to take pictures but to pay my respects to the men and women who had given their lives in the service of their country and specifically to the 57 friends and comrades that I had served with. For me, making any profit out of that experience would have been wrong. Had any non charitable organisation asked to buy the image I would have thought about it and I would possibly have quoted a price or said no but The Royal British Legion is a charity that is very close to my heart They do exceptional work supporting our service and ex service people and every year along with millions of others I spend a few pounds to by my poppy to support their cause. This request gave me the opportunity to do just a little bit more.

Can't imagine who would be low enough to question your actions on this, but I am sure that there are several of the chest thumpers just waiting for the opportune moment to pounce. A tip of the hat to you sir for doing what makes you happy!

Nobody has done that.

I know a lot of professional photographers, but I don't know a single one--not a single one--who rejects the concept of doing true charity work. That's a strawman argument.
