I had never seen one until a few weeks ago. Had to post on here to get the experts to identify for me. I found these two a couple of days ago. I assume more will be on the way... Can you identify male/female? It was amazing to me how strong the bond was when one was trying to fly right at me! I know the one flying towards is a little oof, but he/she was all over the place!
Are they native to Eastern North Carolina? I have lived here all my life and have never seen any. Maybe being interested in macro makes me notice things more. :)

Here's one more, after they separated. This one apparently had to rest before flying off.

Great shots.

The red area looks a fly size wrestling ring, and they are battling it out.

Bas.

Thanks Bas. I hated to interrupt whatever was going on, just couldn't let the opportunity pass me by. I'm just amazed that I've never seen these guys until the last few weeks.

Nice catches. That 2nd one is amazing. Looks like one is flying right at ya. Very cool stuff.

Thanks striving! I was hoping the second shot would turn out a little better. I was not prepared for it too fly at me like that. So I just did the best I could on short notice!
The body looks a little different than the robberfly I saw a couple of weeks ago, but the head is very similar. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
