I've wanted a small flash to carry with my G9. I have a 430ex, but I'd like something smaller. Any G-series users here also carry a 270?

Yep, and it's an reasonably punchy little beast with GN of 21 at wide and 27 at tele. The form factor fits well with my G10 - certainly not as unweildy as a 580. But . . . but . . . the zoom is manual; you have to pull the head forward by hand. This also frees the head up for tilt; it performs well on bounce on a standard 9-10 foot ceiling, but toils in larger venues.

There is no swivel, which means for portrait you have to rely on an adjacent white wall for side lighting. If that's what you want, or need. It recycles fast, and can comfortably keep up with the G10 on continuous. There's no wireless, and exposure is controlled by the camera.

Is it worth the money? For me, yes, given its limitations. I even use it as an emergency flash on my DSLRs if I really want to travel light. The EX270 II has more capability, and can act as a slave.

I have the 270 EXII for my G11, great, capable little flash. (I also have the 580EXII, and that flash alone is twice the size of the G11....much too big.)

I have the 270EX with my G11 and find it very handy and capable. I also have a third-party sync cord (about half the price of the Canon model) and a Sto-Fen snap-on diffuser. The sync cord is nice to have if you want to do bounce in portrait mode or just get the flash away from the camera.

The size is perfect for the G series. I have a Lowepro belt case for my G11 and a second, similarly sized cheap case that holds the flash, sync cord, extra camera battery, extra flash batteries, remote shutter release, and extra SD card. That makes for a "complete" camera outfit at a fraction of the size and weight of a full DSLR setup.

Received my 270ex today. Wow! Great little flash that is perfect for my G9. Thanks again for your feedback.

Be sure to order this for your 270EX, I had mine about a week before I ordered it. Man it makes all the difference in the world when you want to diffuse direct flash, or use it with bounce. It almost looks like studio lighting on bounce.

Here we go again . . . there are two camps on this - rabid enthusiasts and sceptics. I'm one of the latter. If you bounce, you don't need it. Direct, it has little discernible effect. What it does do, is eat battery and cut your power. On a flash this small, that is not a good idea. But I guess I'll never convince you ;)

Seeing is believing, if you haven't tried it don't knock it.

I have - with an identical gizmo over 20 years ago on a Vivitar 283. It didn't work then, and the physical properties of light have not changed significantly in the intervening years. Before that, I'd tried a white cotton handkerchief and even toilet paper with similar lack of success. I do have a homemade lash-up based on the Lumiquest bounce; that does give good results.
