I tell eveyone the same thing. Primes are great but you cant beat the versatility of a great zoom. My zooms get a lot of work, especially the 24-105 and 24-70. I have one and my wife uses the other. She keeps the 35L in her bag, and i keep the 85L in my pocket for 80% of the workload. But everyone is different so what ever floats your boat is the one you should go with.

I've owned both lenses. The 1.2 is better. Period. The bokah is pure creamy goodness. The CA in my 1.8 lens was bad. The downside to the 1.2 is it's slower to focus, heavy and expensive. But it's my "go to" lens (along with the 35L on my second body) for all my pre-wedding shots.

If you want an awesome 85mm lens check out the Sigma 85 1.4. I recently sold my 85 1.8 due to horrible CA on many outdoor shots. I really wanted the Canon 85 L as I am an L junkie but for half the price of the Canon and image quality/bokeh to match plus it is not nearly as heavy and focus is fast and spot on I had to go with the Sigma.

I used the 85 1.8 90% of the wedding. This was one shot from the hotel

yes the last wedding I did before this one. I used the sigma 85 and now on this one I used the 85 1.8. They compare real close. I won't be able to tell the difference besides the blur
