Hey people, I'm looking at a bit of gear and wondering what you all think? Will the Manfrotto (external link)055XPROB Be stable enough to hold my gripped 7d with 100-400mm lens attached?

Yeah my 055xprob have no problem holding my 7d with 100-400. I don't have the grip but I'm sure it would be fine. What ballhead are you using? A good ballhead is needed if you don't want creep with that combo

As a complete tripod newbie, I tested three tripods including the Manfrotto 055XB (I think that's the same as the one you're looking at) with a Manfrotto 498RC2 Ball Head.

The Manfrotto setup was significantly better than the inexpensive Dolica tripod I had at that time. But, I ended up with an overkill Benro with big Vanguard head. It's way heavier but I, personally, like a dead-solid tripod. The Manfrotto, without heavy winds or vibrations, and a remote shutter release will serve you well.

If you don't have the time to find a great deal on a tripod, consider a used one, like this.

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

Yes, it will hold.. Atleast with the "kit"-ball that I use, 498 RC2 that is..

Used this alot with my 100-400 and 550D w. grip, and I've tried it out with a 5Dmk2 gripped.. With the 5Dmk2 it feels more balanced when you release the ball, but both combos work very well and non creeping.

The 055 tripods + 488/498RC2 is probably the best inexpensive combo you will find for stability.
It's not the lightest setup though, so just be prepared for that. If you're using it for general stuff, then it's great, but you wouldn't want to hike with it. That combo will creep just a bit, but it's not terrible. I actually never noticed it that much until I upgraded to a Gitzo/Markins combo.

Thanks everyone, I only have a small Joby Ball head at the moment but will be upgrading that when funds/wife allow. I've allready got a 430 ex ii and a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 in my cart ready to buy.

Cheers, Jason
