Just got this in my google reader stream from DPReview.

TOKYO–Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it will launch the world's first[1] SDHC memory card with embedded wireless LAN functionality to meet the SD Memory Card Standard. The new card, "FlashAir™", has an 8GB capacity and supports both peer-to-peer transfers and uploads to and downloads from servers. Samples will be available from November 2011 and sales will start in February 2012.

FlashAir will be featured at IFA 2011, in Berlin, Germany from September 2.

At a time when digital cameras have achieved immense popularity, users want a quick and easy way to share photographs with friends and to transfer them to and from online storage services and social networks. Toshiba provides the solution with FlashAir, the world's first SDHC memory card with embedded wireless LAN functionality that is fully compliant with the SD Memory Card Standard.

FlashAir's embedded wireless communication function allows users to upload and download photographs to and from a server and to exchange photographs and other data with other devices, including digital cameras[2] that are FlashAir compliant and, smartphones and PCs that support wireless LAN. All transfers are done wirelessly, without any need for a cable connection. Key features of the new card include the ability to receive as well as transmit and lower power consumption than other cards with similar functions.

Even in digital cameras not compliant with FlashAir, the new card can share digital images with smartphones and PCs that support wireless LAN.

Toshiba will secure certification of FlashAir for wireless communication in Japan, North America and Europe.

Toshiba will reinforce and extend its leadership of memory business by further enhancing its SD memory card line-up.

Looks like the Eye-Fi has some competition finally.

8gb class 6, seems pretty good, I am not sure what my Eye Fi card speed is?

One day, these will be in CF format, and reliable. Oh what a day that will be.

I got an Eye-Fi the other day. It's Class 6. I'm not sure what Toshiba brings to the table compared to Eye-Fi but hopefully the competition will drive prices down.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

+1, maybe better software?

IIRC, its focus is on bringing data both ways, which doesn't make particular sense since anything that can take a SD card that would need data uploaded onto it would do so via WiFi directly instead of needing a card inside of it acting as a WiFi receiver.

Yeah both ways is kinda silly I think. I don't know of any application where that would be useful.

IMHO the priority should be on making these things into CF variants. I'm lucky in that I have a camera with both kinds of slots...not everyone else does.

sd cards are more commonly found on cameras including p&s's, so there's a bigger market via the sd route.

True, but a proper CF card with reliable results would fetch a higher price in the higher end markets.

You can market to the mass or you can market to the elite.

Considering the WFT is about what 700$? A wireless CF card would have 1/2 its functionality (NO LV) It could easily fetch a good 350$ They have cards fetching that already by having the capacity and speed, so its a very real potential market.

EyeFi once said that other then the market, the architecture of the CF Cards was harder to make wireless, i don't know how true that is, but if its the case, starting with a lower tier unit, an sd card, to a mass market would help them develop a higher end version CF later.
