I am working on a project for my wife.

A friend of hers is retiring, so I was recruited to take a group shot of everyone waving goodbye. Problem is that not everyone works at the same time. I did the shoot in three sittings, positioned so they could easily be patched together into one seamless shot.

The problem that I am having is with the hair. There are a few places where wisps of hair need to overlay someone else's jacket, or skin, etc. The original background was foliage, so selecting the strands from such a busy is nearly impossible - well, skip nearly, it's impossible.

What I want to do, is cut of the selection at an appropriate place, then draw in the continuation of the hair later.

Does anyone know of a technique or tutorial to draw convincing hair? On most cases it will be dark hair over both light and dark backgrounds, and in at least one instance it will be blond hair over a mixed background.

Thanks,

Rad

Specifically, here is one that I will be doing. On viewers right, I cut the hair off the woman in the hat. Clearly looks cut. On the left, it is (fairly) intact, with the background. The second image is where she will go. Any thoughts?

Also, you can see some of the green foliage background through the hat. Any thoughts on that?

Oh, and for the moment, I am not yet working on WB matching, so don't worry about that.

Could you post the image without mask?

On the green through the hat: Just remove the green color and it won't be a problem. (layer on top of it, blend mode hue or color, brush whatever color that should be behind the hat.)

See below. Just to be clear, the overlay, or "new" hair only has to look authentic, it does not have to exactly be this hair. Which is why I though masking would be more work than just painting.

Good thought. Thanks.

When doing these sorts of composites one needs to plan ahead in order to get the most realistic results. If you're extracting people you need to choose a contrasting background that simplies the task.

I'd go with something like this: the images posted didn't have enough resolution. This was done with two channel masks. One created with the Pen Tool to extract the head and torso of the subject. Then a duplicate copy of the Green channel was used to isolate the hair; and finally the two channel masks were combined to make a composite mask.
