Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, FL

I usually always travel with my camera in my car, and I do not get to St. Pete often,
so even on an unusually gloomy day here in SW Florida, I took some pictures.

This museum opened in 1982, and included an 11,000 sq ft addition in 1989.
In 1995, it underwent a major renovation.

Actually, the Dali Museum you're showing here opened about a year ago at a new location on Tampa Bay next to the Mahaffey Theater and Al Lang Field. Great place to visit!

Yes, I was on Tampa Bay next to the Mahaffey Theater and Al Lang Field.

But I am confused, is this the 2nd location in St. Pete, and is this a newer location from the history below which is directly from the museum?

"The Museum celebrated 24 years in St. Petersburg in March 7, 2006. However, the history of the collection began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1942. Industrialist A. Reynolds Morse and Eleanor Reese began their marriage and their lifelong involvement with Dali and his wife, Gala, as friends and collectors with the purchase of their first painting Daddy Longlegs of the Evening-Hope! in 1943. They spent the following 40 years seeking out the artist's work and assembling the largest private collection of Dali's art in the world.

Ten years later, they began the search for a new, permanent home for their collection. After seeing an article in the Wall Street Journal, "U.S. Art World Dillydallies over Dali," St. Petersburg attorney James W. Martin persuaded local leaders to approach the Morses to choose St. Petersburg. With the financial support of the City of St. Petersburg and the State of Florida, the collection moved to Florida in 1980.

The Museum opened its doors in St. Petersburg Florida, in March 1982, with the Morse bequest - the most comprehensive private collection of Dali's work in the world. The Raymond James Community Room, a two-story, 11,000 square foot addition, opened in January 1989 to accommodate the museum's many programs and activities. In April 1995, major renovations to the original gallery space consisted of several interior walls, which provided additional space to display special exhibits and more of the museum's collection"

Yes, this is the second location. The history describes their first site, which was on 3rd Street S, overlooking Bayboro Harbor. That building is being taken over by USF as part of their campus expansion, I believe.

This new building is larger and definitely more impressive!

Like you said the new building is quite impressive. I was back, in it today, and will post some interior shots in another thread.
