Planning to upgrade to 60D

I have 500D at present and a hobyist in spare time.

I am planning to give my daughter a camera this birthday (she is a major now). I have three options
1. G12
2. S95
3. My 500D with 18-135 or 18-55 lens

If she is open to third option, I get opportunity to upgrade myself to 60D. I am not considering 600D as it has only one crosstype AF sensor (am I right). My 500D, the other day refused to focus using one of outer focus points when the scene was back lit. The centre point locked on instantaneously. I use my camera only for still and not at all for video. Further the price difference between 600 & 60 is manageable.

Since I am not be upgrading again in a hurry again for many years Is their any views on my choice of camera. Is 60D likely to be upgraded soon to 65D (especially sensor)

If you don't shoot video, why not go with a 40D or 50D? They are both great cameras. You can buy one of those plus a lens and spend around the same price as you would on the 60D. One of the reasons I bought my 40D was because of the fps. I don't know if that is important to you, but they both shoot faster than the 60D. And there really is no point in waiting for the next camera to come out. There's always gonna be a new one just around the corner.

an upgrade to the 60D soon is unlikely, it was announced on 8/26/10.

The 60d has a lot more to offer over the older versions than just video. Built in off camera flash control, a 1 megapixel lcd that swivels and has live view, canon's top of the line battery, on-board raw processing, not to mention a much improved sensor and processor.

If you put off upgrading for fear of a newer model coming out, you'll never end up getting anything. I say get the 60d, you know you want to!

While 50D is excellent, I feel its sensor will not be upgrade. At present I tend to restrict to iso 800 while 60D will give one stop better.

Not sure what you shoot or how particular when it comes to image quality. Get a 7D and have AF micro adjust. There are lovers and haters of the 7D but according to the lovers its the best crop body offering from canon (not including a 1.3 crop 1dmk4). OR say the heck with it and keep what you have but start buying the lenses you desire. IMO a crop body should be mated with a wide angle prime to shoot available light like a 24L, 35L or more affordable excellent 35 f/2. Lenses will increase creative control. A Canon 85 f/1.8 is an awesome gem that will really change the feel of your photos due to longer FL giving compression to the picture.

My recommendation is to wait for the 7dmk2 that will hopefully improve on ISO performance and picture files that do not require additional post processing to create sharper images. A friend of mine even finds his 60d files to be sharper straight out of camera compared to a 7d. Yes this is a "friends" opinion but it seems believable.

If your daughter is willing to do the jump into the expensive world of dslr's give her a dslr. If she's more into the casual snap shot person go with a S95, G12 or the panasonic LX5 (can zoom while recording video unlike the canon lineup).

You always can consider pictures from a 60D.

The 60D has worked well at actual events with no problems.

Great shot, I thought the Firebird looked like a R/C car for a minute or the starter is 8 feet tall.

Having owned a 30D, practically owning a 50D (my girlfriends and use it a lot) and now a owner of a 60D I would not suggest buying a 40D or 50D.

As far as ISO goes on the 60D I can comfortable shoot up to 1600 ISO and 3200 ISO looks pretty good too.

And to me, micro adjustment on the 7D isn't worth the extra couple hundred $$$, also, though it does have a "better" AF system. The AF on the 60D (and other xxD cameras) is more than capable of keeping up with action.

The battery of the 60D is awesome. Live view on the 50D would drain a battery within minutes, I can shoot video, use live view a lot, and take over a thousand still images with my 60D and the battery still shows to be "full" on the top lcd screen. Its incredible. Still want a grip for better "ergonomics" though.

I am casual enthusiast, 7D may be a bit overkill (both spec & moneywise -- not into any serious action shots). Few days back handled both 60D & 7D in a shop. 7D looked a bit daunting in first imression while 60D seemed familiar.

Agreed 7D update may be around the corner and their is no model above from where the technology can be just borrowed & used as canon has done for 1100, 500 & 550 models. Therefore Canon has to bring in new technology breaking higher technology barriers. Seems to be a good idea to wait (may be few months away or even a year away:p) as looking at Nikon pricing, canon may blink and bring down the price also.

My daughter plays around with my camera and am hoping that she may eventually become interested (otherwise she is into hotel management). I am planning to ask her with her birthday in Nov.

I thought the 60D had the same sensor as the 7D and had video, etc.

DC Fan -- Great pictures. Only 50% marks to camera body (100% marks to person behind camera:lol and balance to lens as there seems to be a L lens of 70-200 variety in front of camera.
